Sleep Problems Increase Your Risk for Stroke

February 14, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

A study published in the journal Neurology reports analyzed data from more than 4,500 people participating in INTERSTROKE, a large international case-control study of patients who have experienced a stroke. One of the findings from the study is “people who slept less than five hours a night on average were three times more likely to have a stroke than those who got seven hours of sleep — the recommended minimum for adults.” They also found sleeping more than nine hours a day accounted for a two-fold increase in risk for stroke.

Doctors say the study is in line with other research linking poor quality of sleep to high blood pressure as well as impairments to blood vessels, both risk factors for stroke. A director of the Center for Circadian and Sleep Medicine at Northwestern Medical School, Dr. Phyllis Zee, explains things like fragmented sleep and sleep apnea impact a person’s ability to regulate metabolism, blood pressure and inflammation as well as increases the risk for diabetes, heart disease and dementia. Again all risk factors for stroke.

Experts say there are steps we can take to improve our quality of sleep. One of the first things is to make your bedroom a room of rest and not the place where you watch TV or read books. Make sure the room is dark at night, and maintain a regular bedtime. Get in the habit of waking at the same time each day. Avoid drinking alcohol at least three hours before bedtime, and expose yourself to morning light. Studies show it may be more beneficial to exercise early in the day.

Interested in Independent Senior Living but Worried About the Cost?

February 12, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Independent Living

While a retirement community may sound appealing, many seniors worry the cost is too high. The truth is, there is a wide range in the cost of independent senior living communities based on things like geographic location, services and amenities that all impact your monthly fee.

Luxury communities in metropolitan areas tend to be priced higher as do those in more desirable neighborhoods. Also, the apartment’s square footage, number of bedrooms/bathrooms, location within the community such as sought-after views or end-units, balconies or private patios can all up the price.

Experts say it is important to consider the value of the services and amenities you receive. In your own home, you may have paid for things like lawn care and landscaping services as well as encountered unexpected home repairs and maintenance upkeep. Utilities and property taxes for a home that may have more space than you need at this stage in your life can be costly.  Additionally, safely aging in place can often require expensive home modifications.

The social aspect of community living is something many seniors say they were surprised by the amount of value it offers. At MorningStar of Billings, we make it easier to connect formally as well as informally with restaurant-style dining, billiards and game room, bistro, life enrichment room, theater and a complement of wellness programs and activities. For your convenience, we offer surface parking spaces as well as attached garages on the cottages.

MorningStar of Billings represents the finest in senior housing. Residents enjoy carefree retirement years with opportunities for new friendships, predictable budgeting and activities amid beautiful surroundings. Our contemporary-style cottages and suites are maintenance free and allow you to spend more time doing what you love best, including being able to travel without worry. In addition, independent living residents have priority access to our assisted living and memory care suites, which gives you the security of knowing extra supportive care is available—if you ever need it. Medications That Increase Fall Risk

February 09, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living, Dementia Care

The Harvard Medical School reports it is estimated 1 in 3 people over age 65 will fall each year, and every 19 minutes a senior dies from a fall-related injury. Statistics show women are at higher risk for a fall but men are more likely to die from their injuries than women.

Seniors should be aware of several things that can affect balance and lead to a fall. These include certain medications, inner ear problems, foot pain, weight changes and vitamin D deficiency. Anti-hypertensive medications prescribed to keep blood pressure under control or decrease the risk of stroke and heart failure are all known to affect balance. A common side effect is orthostatic hypotension, a condition that happens if blood pressure gets too low; and results in lightheadedness, faintness and dizziness especially when the person attempts to stand from a sitting or lying down position.

Medications that suppress the central nervous system may also result in a fall as they reduce alertness, and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we proudly offer the Colorado Springs area individualized assisted living dementia care. If you are a family member searching for quality care for a loved one with memory impairment, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.  Set within a gentle, loving environment, our care takes a resident-directed approach that utilizes multi-sensory cues to calm and to awaken memories, to support capabilities and, above all, to affirm dignity and value.  Please visit our website to learn more.

Downsizing Offers a New Adventure for Older Adults

February 09, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Some simple solutions to help you decorate your new apartment include bringing with you or buying multi-purpose furniture.  This could include upholstered storage benches or cubes, nesting coffee tables, extension desks, and sized-down sofa and chairs more suited to a compact footprint.  Attractive baskets and storage carts also help to make a small place feel more organized.

If you want to use some of your current furniture, measure it, and then draw up a floor plan of the new place and lay it all out to see how it will fit.  In addition, since your new place is smaller, it will most likely not have as many closets as your old home so go through your clothing and only take the items you truly enjoy wearing.  Give the rest to charity.  Lastly, consider the amenities at your new place.  For example if they have an onsite fitness center, you probably do not need to bring along your own in-home treadmill or stationary bike.

At MorningStar of Billings, our beautiful senior community offers stylish cottages and suites that are ready to move into and just require your furnishings and personal items. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, fitness room, billiards and game room, life enrichment room, raised garden beds and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  If you are looking for independent or assisted living in Billings, MT, we encourage you to contact us or visit our website for more information.

Managing Chronic Conditions in Cold Weather

January 29, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Winter can pose additional challenges for seniors with chronic conditions. The colder weather often exacerbates symptoms and requires extra care and management. For residents in assisted living Fort Collins and receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, it’s particularly important to have strategies in place for managing these conditions during the colder months. Here’s how seniors can stay on top of their chronic conditions when the temperature drops.

1. Stay Warm and Comfortable

Maintaining a warm and comfortable environment is essential for managing chronic conditions. For seniors in assisted living Fort Collins, it’s crucial to ensure that living spaces are adequately heated and free from drafts. Wearing layers of clothing and using extra blankets can help maintain body heat.

2. Regular Health Monitoring

Colder weather can affect various chronic conditions, from arthritis to cardiovascular diseases. Regular monitoring of health indicators is vital, especially for residents in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins. Blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, and other devices should be used consistently to track health.

3. Stay Active Indoors

Physical activity is important for managing many chronic conditions. In assisted living Fort Collins, indoor exercise programs can help maintain mobility and strength, which is especially beneficial during the winter months. Activities like stretching, chair yoga, or light aerobics are suitable for indoor environments.

4. Nutritious Diet

A healthy diet plays a significant role in managing chronic conditions. Winter can be a time when people eat less fresh produce, so incorporating fruits and vegetables into meals is important for seniors, particularly in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins. Nutrient-rich foods can support overall health and help manage chronic conditions.

5. Medication Management

Proper medication management is critical in cold weather when health risks can increase. For those in assisted living Fort Collins, it’s important to have a system in place to ensure medications are taken correctly and on time. Automated pill dispensers or medication management services can be helpful tools.

6. Access to Healthcare Services

Easy access to healthcare services is essential for seniors with chronic conditions. In Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, transportation services to medical appointments and telehealth options ensure that residents receive the necessary care without having to venture out into harsh weather conditions.

7. Mental Health Support

The winter months can also impact mental health. Seniors, especially in assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, should have access to mental health support to cope with the potential increased feelings of isolation or depression during this season.

Staying Ahead of Chronic Conditions in Winter

For seniors in assisted living Fort Collins and those receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, effectively managing chronic conditions during winter requires a multifaceted approach. By ensuring a warm living environment, regular health monitoring, indoor physical activity, a nutritious diet, proper medication management, easy access to healthcare services, and mental health support, seniors can maintain their health and well-being during the colder months.

Preparation and proactive management are key to ensuring that seniors can navigate the winter season safely and comfortably while keeping their chronic conditions well-controlled. Remember, the cold weather doesn’t have to exacerbate health challenges. With the right care and strategies, residents of assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins can continue to lead a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle all year round.

Winter Walking: Staying Steady on Slippery Surfaces

January 26, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Winter can be a beautiful but challenging season, especially for seniors. The icy and slippery conditions increase the risk of falls, making it crucial for those in assisted living Fort Collins and receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins to take extra precautions. Here are some essential tips for staying steady and safe while walking during the winter months.

1. Wear Proper Footwear

One of the most important aspects of winter safety is wearing the right shoes. For residents of assisted living Fort Collins, choosing footwear with non-slip soles and good traction can make a significant difference. Shoes with rubber soles and deep treads are ideal for preventing slips on icy surfaces.

2. Use Walking Aids if Necessary

For those who need them, especially in settings like Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, walking aids such as canes or walkers equipped with ice picks can provide extra stability. It’s important to ensure that these aids are suitable for winter conditions.

3. Take Slow, Short Steps

When navigating slippery surfaces, taking slow, short steps can help maintain balance. Seniors in assisted living Fort Collins should be encouraged to take their time and avoid rushing, as hurried movements increase the risk of falls.

4. Keep Walkways Clear

Ensuring that walkways are clear of snow and ice is crucial in preventing falls. In Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins and other senior living communities, maintenance staff should regularly salt and shovel walkways. However, seniors should also be vigilant and report any hazardous areas to staff.

5. Stay Physically Active

Maintaining physical strength and balance is key to preventing falls. Residents of assisted living Fort Collins can engage in indoor exercises to improve their stability, flexibility, and overall fitness, which are crucial for safe winter walking.

6. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Paying attention to the environment is essential when walking outside in winter. Seniors, including those in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, should be cautious of black ice and uneven surfaces, and avoid walking outside during poor weather conditions when possible.

7. Plan Your Route

Planning the walking route in advance can help seniors avoid potentially slippery areas. In assisted living Fort Collins, staff can assist residents in choosing the safest paths for their outdoor activities.

8. Dress Appropriately

Besides footwear, dressing in warm, layered clothing is important for comfort and safety during winter walks. This is especially relevant for seniors in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, as proper clothing can also prevent hypothermia.

Staying Safe on Winter Walks

For seniors in assisted living Fort Collins and those receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, following these winter walking tips can greatly reduce the risk of falls and injuries. By wearing appropriate footwear, using walking aids if necessary, taking careful steps, and being aware of their surroundings, seniors can safely enjoy the beauty of winter while staying active and independent. Additionally, the support from staff in senior living communities ensures that walkways are safe and that residents are well-equipped for winter conditions. Remember, safety during winter walks is not just about avoiding falls; it’s about enjoying the season with confidence and peace of mind. With the right preparations and precautions, seniors in assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins can navigate slippery surfaces safely and continue to enjoy the outdoors, even during the colder months.

Important Financial Planning Tips for Senior Living

January 26, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

Whether you’re just starting to plan for the future or getting ready to move into a senior living community soon, it’s important to take the right steps to make a good financial decision for yourself and your family.

Senior living communities offer seniors a place to retire in peace. All-inclusive senior living communities in Glendale allow seniors to experience life without worrying about home maintenance, chores or burdensome tasks. But what community is right for you and your financial situation?

The costs associated with senior living

All-inclusive retirement communities include daily meals, planned social activities, events, on-site apartments, supervision, support and much more. Many of these senior living communities in Arizona boast walkable communities, where it’s easy to catch up with your neighbors, grab a coffee and enjoy your day.

Tips for budgeting

  • Take cost into consideration

Depending on your situation, it may be more affordable to settle into a senior living community than to continue caring for a home as you age. Every community offers something different, but all-inclusive senior living at MorningStar ensures that seniors can live their lives much in the same way they did before relocating.

  • Understand the levels of care

The three most popular levels of care for senior living communities are independent living, assisted living and memory care. Within these options, a retirement community may even offer different levels of care within the 3 choices. Depending on what your needs are, costs may vary.

  • Understand your benefits and insurance options

Veteran benefits, long-term care insurance, medicare and out-of-pocket payments are popular ways seniors pay for their senior living care. What your community accepts may vary, so be sure to ask what they accept when you tour your new home.

The Role of Technology in Managing Glaucoma for Seniors

January 24, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Alzheimer's care

As we advance into an era where technology intertwines with healthcare, its impact on managing conditions like glaucoma, particularly in the elderly, is increasingly significant. For residents in assisted living Fort Collins and those receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, technology offers innovative solutions to enhance the management of glaucoma. Let’s explore how technology is revolutionizing care for senior glaucoma patients.

1. Telemedicine: A Bridge for Continuous Care

Telemedicine has emerged as a critical tool, especially for seniors in assisted living Fort Collins. It enables regular consultations with eye care specialists through virtual platforms, negating the need for strenuous travel. This is particularly beneficial for seniors in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, ensuring they receive consistent and specialized eye care.

2. Digital Monitoring Tools for Eye Health

The development of home-use digital tools to monitor intraocular pressure (IOP) has empowered seniors, including those in assisted living Fort Collins, to actively participate in their eye health management. These devices allow for regular monitoring and sharing of data with their doctors, facilitating timely adjustments to their treatment plans.

3. Apps for Medication Adherence

Medication management is pivotal in controlling glaucoma. For seniors, particularly in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, medication reminder apps are invaluable. These apps help ensure that glaucoma medications are taken at the right time, enhancing the effectiveness of the treatment regimen.

4. Advanced Diagnostic and Testing Technologies

Eye care clinics now employ advanced diagnostic tools, significantly benefiting those in assisted living Fort Collins. Technologies like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) aid in the early detection and ongoing management of glaucoma, enabling more precise and effective treatment plans.

5. Online Educational Resources

Access to online educational resources provides seniors and caregivers, especially in assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, with crucial information about glaucoma. This knowledge helps in understanding the condition better and staying informed about the latest treatment options and management strategies.

6. Support Through Online Communities

For seniors with glaucoma, online support groups offer a platform for emotional and informational support. These communities are especially helpful for residents in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, providing a sense of belonging and shared understanding.

Embracing Technology for Better Glaucoma Management

In conclusion, the integration of technology in healthcare has been a boon for seniors with glaucoma in assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins. From telemedicine to innovative diagnostic tools, technology enhances the care and management of glaucoma, making treatments more accessible and effective. It empowers seniors to take an active role in managing their condition, leading to better outcomes and an improved quality of life. As technology continues to evolve, it promises even more advanced solutions for seniors managing glaucoma, ensuring they receive the best care possible.

How to Make Lasting Friendships in Retirement Living

January 24, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in retirement homes

Staying social and being surrounded by good company makes life more enjoyable for everyone. Staying social and maintaining good friendships in retirement has added benefits for mental and physical health. However, it is harder for some seniors to stay social during their retirement years because of decreased mobility or difficulty getting outside the house.

Experiencing loneliness and isolation in old age can be wearisome, leading to symptoms of depression and other physical concerns. Making friends in retirement can be difficult, but these tips to help seniors experience lasting friendships in retirement homes may be beneficial.

How to Find Good Friends in Senior Living Communities

  1. Spend time doing what you love! Exploring your passions, interests and hobbies is a great way to meet like-minded individuals who also enjoy the same things as you. This is an easy way to set common ground and begin a strong relationship. If you enjoy golfing, exercising, painting, reading or enjoying the outdoors, participating in those activities regularly will benefit you greatly when trying to make new friends in retirement.

  2. Volunteering. Senior living communities in Glendale offer volunteer opportunities for you to dedicate your time to a cause you enjoy. Here, you can meet similar individuals who advocate for the same causes as you. Chances are you’ll meet someone with more in common with you than you think!

  3. Spiritual bonding. Picking a retirement home with religious and spiritual outlets is a great choice if you are looking for more friends who share your same beliefs. While MorningStar Retirement Communities were founded on a Judeo-Christian tradition, we honor all faith systems and worldviews among our team members and residents.

3 Important Questions to Ask Before Choosing a Senior Living Community

January 22, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

Transitioning to a senior living community can be really exciting for some seniors! Many look at this new move to a retirement community as embarking on a new journey. However, for some, they may feel reserved and uncertain about their new future ahead. Moving to a senior living community can be overwhelming, but it doesn’t have to be. By asking the right questions, you are sure to find a senior living community right for you.

Consider these 3 questions the next time you tour a retirement community:

  1. What is your personality and preference? What sort of senior living community do you want to be a part of? If you are looking for active retirement homes in Arizona, be sure to find communities that encourage attendance of events and activities while also creating spaces for members to explore and interact with one another.

  2. What level of care do you require? This may be a more difficult question to answer and may require some evaluation from family members or medical providers. When searching for a retirement home, will you be solely independently living? Or will you require help with some tasks daily? Picking a retirement home based on what level of care they can offer you is really important and puts your future on track for great support later on.

  3. What amenities and activities does the senior living community offer? While most retirement homes have some level of amenities and shared common spaces, luxury-style senior living in Glendale offers seniors more accessibility to the things they do daily without dealing with the trouble of travel. All-inclusive senior living includes an on-site gym, salon, bistro, movie theatre and much more. Make sure you find a home equipped with all the things you regularly love to do!

Our building is built on a figure-eight plan that lets residents freely move about while ensuring they always find their way back to an inviting common area.

Through the rigors of MorningStar’s Lavender Sky training, our staff truly understands Alzheimer’s disease and other memory-loss conditions; and after a family decides to place a loved one in our care, we get to work. This starts by learning as much as we can about the person’s background, talents and personal preferences through a tool called “To Know Me is To Love Me.” Using this information, we create a specialized, individualized care plan that helps to calm or stimulate as a particular situation needs.

Activity Ideas for People Living With Alzheimer’s Disease

January 12, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

An article in the online publication, Medical News Today, suggests activities that can provide a person with Alzheimer’s disease a sense of normality and to help enrich their life. A study from 2020 reported meaningful activities are important for those with dementia as they can improve both psychological and physical health.

One suggestion of an indoor activity is to sit with the person and look through photo albums of family together. This is an effective way to engage the person and is typically enjoyable. Another relaxing activity can be listening to the person’s favorite music; or if they are more hands-on, do an arts and crafts project. Playing an instrument has much the same calming effect.

Researchers say studies show knitting and crocheting to be calming activities for those with Alzheimer’s. Not only does it help reduce anxiety and depression, but the person gets a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, done within a group setting, it can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. Routine things like daily chores can also be comforting and help the person feel like they are a contributing member of the family/group.

Experts say outdoor activities are important to a person’s overall health and well-being. One area of research for those having dementia includes therapeutic gardening. Data shows gardening can improve a person’s emotional and cognitive state, increase engagement and reduce anxiety.

Other healthy outdoor activities include walking in the park (getting back to nature is good for all of us) and feeding the birds. If the person uses a mobility aid such as a walker or cane, be sure to have them use it. The same goes for wearing good-fitting walking shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests keeping to a routine each day is helpful; as well as offering other promising ideas worth considering. In addition, they say to remember everyone is different, and if an activity does not seem to be to their liking, try something else. Most importantly activities should be those the person enjoys.

Grieving for a Family Member With Alzheimer's Disease

January 10, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is upsetting news for all.  Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold.  Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you’ll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.”  They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better.  Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors.  Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned.  You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day.  A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so.  Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings.  They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses.  Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

MorningStar at Bear Creek provides compassionate, individualized care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our care addresses the needs of our residents starting with the very design of our community to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals.  For memory care Colorado Springs families can count on, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Please contact us to learn more about the finest memory care Colorado Springs offers.

The Move to Assisted Living at MorningStar of Billings

January 08, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living, MorningStar of Billings may be your answer. Along with beautiful surroundings, we provide an extensive range of amenities, wellness programs, care services and more.

When a loved one needs more care than they can get in their own home, it may be time to start thinking about a move to assisted living.  If your family is new to the concept of senior living and all it means, please know that MorningStar will work with you every step of the way to help you make informed decisions, and make the eventual move-in process easier.

To start with, we understand that for your parent or elderly relative, the move is a major lifestyle transition, which is why we approach each move-in with great sensitivity.  One way we do this is to try and nurture a relationship from the start that reinforces the positive aspects of community life and tries to help the person envision the many possibilities of a new adventure.

Once your family puts down a deposit to secure a chosen suite, our “House to Home” plan goes into full swing.  This starts by collecting pertinent information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move-in including a medical assessment and physician’s care plan for each new assisted living and memory care resident.

On a more practical level, we offer packing tips including what items are most important to bring such as furnishings and personal belongings that are most significant emotionally, nostalgically as well as functionally.  We want the resident’s new “home” to bring them comfort and joy, which is why we suggest, if possible, furnishings should be arranged similar to their prior residence.  Keep in mind; it is especially helpful to those with low vision or cognitive impairment.

This is just a start of the on-going support we extend to new residents and their families.  We are ready to answer any questions you may have and direct you to our website for contact information as well as other pertinent details.  MorningStar of Billings’ entire team is engaged in finding ways to build a true family, one loving relationship at a time.

MorningStar of Billings’ mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding independent living, assisted living and memory care.

Enjoy Delicious Meals at MorningStar of Fort Collins

December 25, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

At MorningStar of Fort Collins, we understand the importance of gathering as a community to “break bread” each day.  We believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other, and when our residents sit down to a delicious meal served restaurant-style, it creates lasting bonds and fellowship within our “family.”

We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why MorningStar meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Menu offerings are designed by our Executive Chef and include daily and weekly specials as well as a la carte items. Dining is available all day which means you can eat when you are hungry and not according to a rigid schedule.

As a resident, you will be treated to seasonal menus and special holiday feasts such as those we enjoy at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Also, our Chef modifies menus and recipes to accommodate residents’ changing needs and tastes.  Moreover, you can easily self-manage any dietary restrictions as we offer a wide selection of low sodium, sugar-free, no sugar added, and low-fat foods.

MorningStar of Fort Collins also believes that nutrient-rich ingredients can help stimulate the appetite and support brain health.  Therefore, we prepare meals using BrainWise super foods that contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.  Super foods include acai, leafy dark greens, dark chocolates, berries, and fish, nuts and other foods high in Omega 3 fats.

For our memory care residents, food is as much about Community as it is about Nutrition. To encourage appetites, our team members sit and share meals with residents, and many are served “family style” as they are in private homes.  Much of our food is modified out of respect for residents’ somewhat compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

Located on the southeast side of the city, MorningStar of Fort Collins is convenient to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants and other services.  We have 55 stylish suites for assisted living and another 24 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. For more information about exceptional memory care or assisted living in Fort Collins, please visit our website.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Habits That Are Dangerous for Cognitive Health

December 22, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change.

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6 1⁄2 hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scans, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes.

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as several studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

3 Reasons to Move to Senior Living Now

December 15, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

You may wonder when the best time is to begin transitioning to senior living. Generally, it’s best to move to senior living when you’re still active and can fully take advantage of all that your retirement community has to offer. When the time comes, you can ease into the affiliated assisted living if your needs change. Right now, it’s important to understand what senior living has to offer and how it can elevate your retirement. MorningStar Senior Living Glendale offers luxury-style senior living that supports seniors’ mental, emotional, and physical health and well-being. Below you will find the top 3 reasons seniors are moving to senior living communities now.

1. Experience Great Resort-Style Dining

Unfortunately, many seniors cannot provide themselves with the adequate nutrition necessary to keep them healthy. Aging may make shopping and food preparation difficult and timely for seniors. At MorningStar Retirement Homes Glendale, seniors can experience great resort-style dining with meals prepared by executive chefs. Senior living dining options include homestyle cooking, and vegetarian and gluten-free options, all while using locally grown ingredients when possible.

2. Make Lasting Friendships

Many seniors struggle to make and maintain friendships in old age. Many friends and family members move away or live far distances. In senior living communities, seniors are able to meet like-minded individuals who share the same interests, passions, and similar experiences. Retirement communities make it easy to make lasting friendships through on-site activities and amenities.

3. Retire & Relax

Retirement is not always as relaxing as we envision. For many seniors, retirement can be full of stress and uncertainty. At times, retirement can even be lonely and debilitating. MorningStar Retirement Homes Glendale offers seniors a fresh outlook on retirement. Chores are handled by staff, meaning you have more time to relax and explore the things that you enjoy.
