Reduce Medical Errors by Being Involved in Your Care

March 20, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living Communities

A National Institute of Health survey found patients who were most satisfied with their healthcare were those engaged in self-advocacy. This included a person becoming knowledgeable about their injury and health care needs; and being persistent about speaking up for those needs. The NIH also explains those who felt better about their experience practiced communication skills, were organized, talked to peer mentors and kept a positive attitude.

Research shows practicing self-advocacy, or when a family member actively advocates on the behalf of a loved one, reduces medical errors in hospital settings, doctors’ office or at the pharmacy. It is important as the World Health Organization reports “an estimated 10% of patients in high-income countries are harmed while receiving hospital care.” Also, according to a 2021 report in StatPearls, “medical errors result in about 100,000 deaths in hospitals and clinics annually.”

Most errors are related to diagnoses, prescriptions and use of medicines; and misdiagnoses means delayed treatment and taking the wrong medicines. To ensure the best care you need to be honest with your healthcare provider. This includes providing an account of your symptoms and a list of current prescriptions, over-the-counter medications, herbs, supplements and vitamins you take. Be sure to let them know if you have any drug allergies and provide as complete a medical history as you can including your personal medical record as well as that of your family’s. In addition, let your medical team know if you are a smoker and the amount of alcohol you consume.

Additionally, remember the time you spend with your doctor is short, so prepare beforehand the things you wish to discuss. The Johns Hopkins Armstrong Institute Center for Diagnostic Excellence at Johns Hopkins Medicine in Baltimore has a QuestionBuilder app available by AHRQ at Google Play or the Apple store to guide you in questions you should ask.

Experts also say to remember you and your doctor are a team. Being your own health advocate or that of a loved one means helping them follow the medical advice recommended by the doctor regarding diet, rest, exercise, smoking, alcohol use and taking medications as prescribed.

Are You Considering Memory Care for a Loved One?

March 17, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

Are you considering a community setting for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia?  Experts say the first and most important thing to learn about senior living communities offering memory care is whether they are up to the task of caring for your loved one.  Do services align with their needs and is the home capable of advanced care down the road?  A Place for Mom’s website says by asking the following questions, you should get the answers you need.

Before you begin your search, they suggest taking a few minutes to think about the needs of your loved one.  Do they have a tendency to wander or exhibit aggressive behaviors?  Do they require help with eating and drinking?  Are they mobile or use a wheelchair or walker?  Other information to relay is if they need help toileting, require 24/7 supervision, or care for medical conditions such as diabetes.

Once you establish that a memory care community is equipped to care for your loved one, now ask questions including how experienced is the staff; and do they have any special training.  If so, is it on-going?  Will your loved one have an individualized care plan?  Also, what is the staff-to-resident ratio during the day and at night?

Inquire about safety protocols starting with secured doors, courtyards, and grounds as well as an emergency call system.  Are hallways color-coded making it easier for residents to navigate about more independently?   Is there a nurse on duty, and how extensive are medical services?   Also, ask about the type of memory care activities and treatments available.  After you have learned what you can, experts say the final decision will most likely come down to your peace of mind.

MorningStar of Fort Collins’ goal is to provide the highest quality senior living, which includes compassionate memory care for those in the early onset of dementia through to the most advanced stages.  Our holistic approach to care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  Beginning with dedicated caregivers to activities, programs and meals tailored to our residents’ special needs, we bring a deep understanding of the disease to our care.  Please contact us for more information.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. We have built a reputation for creating homes filled with an atmosphere of love and community. Contact us to learn more about one of the finest senior living communities in Fort Collins, CO.

Finding a Gift for a Loved One with Dementia

March 03, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

Do you find it hard to choose a gift for a loved one with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia? A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral services, explains, finding the best gift for dementia patients may seem challenging as it is difficult to know what they’re experiencing.  However, picking a gift can actually be extremely fun and rewarding — especially if you know what to look for.

They suggest taking a few minutes to think about the things the person used to enjoy, keeping in mind their past career, hobbies and stage of dementia. It is best to keep gifts simple, useful, and tailored to their personal likes and capabilities.

Ideas include a single gift or a yearly subscription for care packages filled with things your loved one would enjoy. This could include natural care products like scented soaps, shampoos, body lotions and scrubs. If a parent is in a memory care community, a large basket of specialty foods, fruits or sweets to share with their caregivers is sure to be a hit. Monthly baskets from a local bakery or flower shop can spread the joy over time and remind the person you are thinking of them.

Smartly-designed dementia board games are not only a fun way to spend time together but can help improve your loved one’s dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and mental strength. Personalized puzzles or memory card games using pictures of the grandkids can be fun for the whole family. PicLink is another game for those with cognitive and memory impairment and is based upon exercises shown to assist with memory.

MorningStar at Bear Creek provides compassionate care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our unique approach to memory care includes finding ways to connect with and nurture the individual essence of each resident, and our energy is put toward finding ways to celebrate and elevate life.  Along with individualized care plans, residents participate in wellness programs and services tailored to their special needs.  Please visit our website for more information about MorningStar’s memory care in Colorado Springs.

How is Mild Cognitive Impairment Diagnosed?

March 03, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Studies report approximately 12-18% of people aged 60 or older have some level of Mild Cognitive Impairment (MCI). So how do you know if you are one of them? The first step to diagnosing MCI typically comes after a person starts to complain of forgetfulness or cognitive problems or initiated at the urging of family members. Doctors explain it is usually more serious if it comes at the request of those closest to the person because as a person develops more of the signs of Alzheimer’s disease, they are often not aware of their memory loss. So, how is MCI diagnosed?

Your doctor will begin with a thorough evaluation to try and determine if the problem is MCI, Alzheimer’s, normal age-related memory loss, or caused by another factor. It is important to note not all cases of MCI develop into dementia and an evaluation could identify medications as the problem. A Harvard Medical School article states, “Establishing the cause and scope of the impairment is helpful in setting a baseline for future evaluations to determine if the condition is progressing to dementia.”

Some of the preliminary tests include a complete blood workup to rule out anemia, infection, kidney and liver disorders, or diabetes. Other tests may check for thyroid abnormalities, elevated blood calcium and vitamin B12 deficiencies.

Cognitive tests begin with an in-depth medical history as well as questions regarding the person’s memory lapses and other thinking problems. Your physician will probably request a family member be there to reaffirm and document the changes. Experts say quickly progressing memory problems are most likely another issue as true dementia progresses slowly.

Your physician may refer you to a neuropsychologist for more tests including paper and pen and computer tests to assess memory, language and other cognitive skills including motor and visual function. If deemed necessary, they may do structural and functional brain scans or an amyloid PET scan, which detects in a living brain the signs of amyloid plaques, the hallmark of neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer's.

Along with independent living and assisted living, MorningStar of Billings offers individualized, loving care to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of MorningStar’s memory care is geared toward residents’ needs from meaningful activities, trained caregivers, food service, security and more. The Link between Cognitive Decline and Vitamin D Levels

March 01, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

Researchers are working hard to find the cause of Alzheimer’s disease as well as more effective treatments. The Medical News Today reports statistics show an estimated 6 million people are living with Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in the US; and it is the sixth leading cause of death in America. Moreover, the number is set to grow to 13 million by 2050 due to the country’s aging population.

For the first time, an observational study has investigated the presence of vitamin D in the brain and its potential effect on cognitive outcomes. Before this study, scientists had been unsure if vitamin D was even present in the brain at all despite other research, which suggested a link between high blood levels of vitamin D and an association with less cognitive decline or dementia. The Tufts University in Massachusetts’s lead author, Kyla Shea, Ph.D. explains their observational study “found better cognitive function is associated with people who have higher concentrations of vitamin D in their brains.”

The study reports finding “vitamin D in the mid-temporal cortex, mid-frontal cortex, the cerebellum and anterior watershed white of the brain, all of which have been implicated in different types and stages of dementia, including AD and dementia with Lewy bodies.” However, the study researchers say there needs to be a larger study to further investigate the matter.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we specialize in providing compassionate, individualized memory care assisted living for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our community in Colorado Springs has 48 suites in a variety of floor plans along with all the amenities and services required for the finest care.  We want you to know we are here to help if your loved one is suffering from memory loss.  Please visit our website to learn more about our holistic care and loving staff.

As We Age, Our Nutritional Needs Change

March 01, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Independent Living

The government first published nutritional recommendations in 1941, which became known as the Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDAs).  At the time, recommendations were more concerned with ensuring the population “as a whole was adequately fed and free from scurvy, rickets and other wartime diseases of malnutrition.”  These early guidelines did not address long-term issues such as heart disease and diabetes.

Since then, we have learned we need to focus on maintaining good nutritional habits well into our senior years to avoid or mitigate our risk for chronic diseases.  One example is type 2 diabetes, which occurs when the body’s muscle, fat and liver cells stop responding well to insulin resulting in consistently high blood sugar.  Doctors say type 2 diabetes can be caused by too much sugar and refined-carbohydrates in our diet, and to lessen our risk, we should maintain a healthy weight and minimize blood-sugar spikes as well as add more fiber to our diet.

Another thing an older adult should be aware of is muscle loss.  Along with resistance training, weightlifting, Pilates, and yoga, nutritionists say to maintain strength we need to include protein in our diet.  Christine Ritchie, director of research for the division of palliative care and geriatric medicine at Massachusetts General Hospital and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School, says older adults’ diet should include more protein than when they were younger.  A man in his 50s needs “about 25 to 30 grams at each meal (like a medium chicken breast or burger, a 5-ounce can of tuna mixed with mayo, 2 cups of cooked rice and beans, or a cup of low-fat cottage cheese).”

Government dietary guidelines report that we burn approximately 200 fewer daily calories after age 50, so if you keep eating like you did in your thirties or forties, you will probably gain weight.  Also, as bone loss starts sometime in our early thirties and continues into old age, seniors should consume foods with calcium and vitamin D. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons recommends 1,200 milligrams a day of calcium for women and 1,000 mg for men.  Additionally, eat fruits and vegetables in a bright range of colors for heart-protecting antioxidants.

At MorningStar of Billings, we recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors. Our meals are created by our Executive Chef and prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible. We also focus on foods known to support brain health which contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. For trusted independent living, assisted living or memory care seniors and their families can count on, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar of Billings’ foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide independent living, assisted living and memory care. Please contact us to learn why MorningStar is such a great place to call home.

It’s Common for Those Living With Dementia to Wander

February 22, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

The Alzheimer’s Association says that six in 10 people with dementia will wander.  The danger with this is someone with Alzheimer’s disease may not remember their name, their address or how to get home.  Furthermore, the more agitated the person becomes when they feel lost and disorientated, the less able they may be to tell someone something that could help get them safely back home.

Experts say anyone suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia that is mobile is at risk for wandering.  Even if the person is in the early stages of the disease, they may still get disorientated; but thankfully there are strategies to help keep your loved one safe.

It is important to have a plan in place in the event that it should happen to your parents or another loved one.  Find out if your area has a “Safe Return Program” and enroll them in it and have them wear a GPS locating device at all times.  Also, learn to recognize the warning signs of potential wandering such as: has the person forgotten how to get to familiar places, talks about going home even when they are home, gets confused as to where familiar places in the home are, and acts nervous or anxious in crowded areas.

Tips to help prevent wandering include creating and sticking to a routine, identifying the times when wandering is most likely to occur, and trying to make sure all of the person’s needs are met so they don’t feel the need to go out.  In addition, reposition door locks out of the line of sight and make sure car keys are not left out.  You can buy a device that sounds an alarm when a door or window is opened; and never leave the person locked in at home or in a car alone.

Along with assisted living, Fort Collins, CO’s MorningStar community offers memory care in a secure environment that allows residents to safely explore their surroundings, including an enclosed patio and courtyard. In addition, our dedicated staff is trained to keep residents engaged and safe. Please visit our website for more information about MorningStar of Fort Collins and our compassionate, loving memory care.

Find These Healthy Food Options for Seniors at MorningStar Senior Living

February 20, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

When it comes to senior care, nutrition is one of the most important factors for maintaining good health and well-being in senior living. At MorningStar Senior Living of Arrowhead, we understand the importance of a healthy diet for our residents in our senior living communities in Glendale Az, which is why we prioritize offering exciting and fun meals that incorporate whole fruits and vegetables. Our chefs at MorningStar senior living communities use fresh, locally sourced produce whenever possible to ensure our residents receive the highest quality food. We also offer a wide range of menu options to accommodate various dietary needs and preferences, including vegetarian and gluten-free options.

Eating whole fruits and vegetables is essential for maintaining good health, especially for seniors. These foods are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and nutrients that the body needs to function properly. They can help reduce the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and cancer. Additionally, they can help seniors maintain a healthy weight, reduce inflammation, and improve brain function. By prioritizing whole fruits and vegetables in our meal plans at MorningStar of Arrowhead, we ensure that our residents receive the essential nutrients they need to stay healthy and happy.

Another great benefit of eating whole fruits and vegetables is that they can help boost the immune system. As we age, the immune system naturally weakens, this makes seniors more susceptible to illness and disease. By consuming a diet rich in whole fruits and vegetables, seniors can give their immune system the boost it needs to fight off infections and other health problems. This is especially important in a senior living community like MorningStar of Arrowhead, where seniors are close to one another and may be more susceptible to illness.

Encouraging the consumption of whole fruits and vegetables in senior living communities should be part of a comprehensive approach to senior care. This is why at MorningStar senior living homes in Glendale, Az, our team of caregivers is trained in all aspects of senior care, including nutrition. Our caregivers work closely with each resident to develop a personalized care plan that meets their unique needs and preferences. Helping a Loved One Decorate Their Assisted Living Suite

February 20, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

We all know that life changes can be fraught with anxiety and fear and moving into assisted living is certainly a major change for many seniors.  However, experts say there are several things families can do to help ease the transition period.

One of those things is to help your loved one make a comfortable home in their new suite.  Julia Bailey, a senior associate and interior design project manager with Denver-based OZ Architecture, explains that, "Moving into assisted living often can feel like a loss of independence and privacy for your loved one, but thoughtful interior design can go a long way toward improving happiness and well-being for the resident, as well as improving overall functionality of the new living space."

Ms. Bailey cautions that you need to remember to let your loved one have a say in how their new home will be decorated, including the personal mementos and photos they want to bring with them and which ones they want to display.  Triggering happy memories with sentimental items is a big step toward making their new place a real home.  Also, accent pillows and pictures are an easy way to add a lot of color and attractiveness to their place.

Please keep in mind safety concerns when placing furniture and avoid using area rugs that can become trip hazards or overcrowding a room and not leaving enough space to easily navigate.  Install handrails where needed and make sure there is easily accessible lighting in the bathrooms and hallways if the person is getting up at night.
Helping your loved stay organized can improve the home’s safety as well as the aesthetic.  Consider any mobility issues the person may have and make sure frequently used items are within easy reach on a shelf.  Chairs and sofas should be firm and stable.
MorningStar of Fort Collins offers residents a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community.  The stylish floor plans of our spacious suites are well-appointed and all that is missing are your own furnishings and personal items.  Also, you will not need to leave behind your furry friend as we are pet friendly. For exceptional assisted living, Fort Collins seniors are encouraged to consider MorningStar, a great place to call home!

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. The Importance of Skin Health for Seniors

February 17, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Retirement Communities

As we age, our skin goes through many changes and it's important to provide it with the care it needs to maintain its health and vitality. At MorningStar of Arrowhead, we understand the importance of skin care for seniors and see skin health as necessary health care for seniors in senior living and retirement communities in Glendale Az. Proper skin care and health education are important aspects of senior care, which is why it's necessary for MorningStar of Arrowhead to offer the very best health care for seniors living in Glendale Az.

Proper skin care for seniors can help prevent skin infections and irritations. As we age, our skin becomes thinner and more fragile, making it more susceptible to skin conditions such as pressure sores, rashes, and infections. By providing seniors with proper skin care, including regular bathing and moisturizing, MorningStar of Arrowhead offers the most trusted healthcare for retirement communities Glendale az has seen for seniors. Helping their residents to take proper care of their skin helps reduce the risk of skin issues and keeps residents' skin healthy and protected. With regular care, seniors can maintain a more youthful and vibrant appearance, boosting their self-esteem and improving their overall quality of life. This can be especially important for seniors who have a strong attachment to their appearance and want to maintain it for as long as possible.

Another important benefit of senior skin care is that it can help prevent skin cancer. Our skin is naturally susceptible to skin cancer, but as we age it becomes more important to have regular skin checks to detect any potential problems. By providing seniors with regular skin care, including regular skin exams, MorningStar Senior Living in Glendale Az can detect and treat any skin issues early on, reducing the risk of skin cancer and ensuring that seniors enjoy good health for as long as possible.

At MorningStar of Arrowhead, we understand the importance of senior skin care, and we make it a priority for all of our residents. Our team of highly-skilled and compassionate caregivers is trained in all aspects of senior skin care. MorningStar’s staff works closely with each resident to develop a personalized healthcare plan that meets their unique needs and preferences. Whether it's helping with bathing and moisturizing or providing skin exams and treatments, our care team is always there for residents when they need them most.

A Healthy Diet May Lower Your Risk for Alzheimer's Disease

February 15, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

The Medical News Today says dementia is one of the leading causes of disability and death worldwide. The debilitating disease has no cure; and available treatments only alleviate symptoms without slowing the progression of the disease. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), dementia affects more than 55 million people globally, and 10 million people receive a diagnosis each year. Of that number it is estimated 60 – 70 percent have Alzheimer’s disease, and 6 million of them are Americans. Unfortunately those numbers are expected to rise to 139 million people across the globe by 2050.

Other rising numbers are in cases of diabetes, obesity, and heart disease, which are all believed to increase a person’s risk for dementia. This is why researchers are not only trying to find a cure for Alzheimer’s and other dementias but ways to reduce people’s risk for the disease.

Dr. Christopher Weber, director of global science initiatives at the Alzheimer’s Association, noted that: “Research looking at the relationship between diet and cognition is well-established. There is strong evidence to suggest that what is good for the heart is good for the head, and we know a healthy diet is good for the heart.”

Researchers say one diet that appears to suggest better cognitive health is the MIND diet, (Mediterranean-DASH Intervention for Neurodegenerative Delay). It is similar to the Mediterranean diet with a heavy focus on green, leafy vegetables, nuts, berries, bean, whole grains, seafood, poultry and wine.

On the other hand, foods high in refined carbohydrates may cause an increase in the risk for Alzheimer’s. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports on a study linking processed meat products, like sausages, salami, and bacon with a relative increased risk of all dementias by 44% and Alzheimer’s disease by 52%.

MorningStar at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs is entirely devoted to the comprehensive care of those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our holistic memory care assisted living is individualized for each resident and every aspect of our community is tailored to serve their needs.  As dementia care specialists, we provide support to our residents and their families with an array of services, wellness programs and activities for the best quality of life. Are You a Caregiver for an Elderly Parent?

February 15, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

If you have become responsible for more and more of the caregiving duties of an elderly parent or another loved one, it may be time to consider a change.  Today’s senior living options include assisted living that provides daily help with personal care, and actually helps residents regain their sense of independence.  Also, once your loved one is getting the proper care they need, it allows you to get back to just enjoying the time you spend together.  Moreover, communities offering assisted living like MorningStar of Billings provide much more than just physical care.  Along with a wealth of amenities, activities and services, it is designed to feel like a real home.

Our first priority is to ensure your loved one gets the care they need.  This starts with a thorough evaluation of their medical and personal history, followed by a care plan approved by you and your parents.  MorningStar’s services also help our families by providing transportation to doctor appointments as well as offer scheduled physician visits and supportive services from third-party providers including skilled nursing care, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy.

Residents have the opportunity for plenty of socializing and are encouraged to participate in a range of activities and wellness programs.  While this is not a substitute for the time your loved one spends with family, you may find your parents are not always available to take your call as they are busy having fun with other residents and staff.

Our services also include providing housekeeping to help ensure residents’ homes are tidy and clean.  By taking care of meals, we see to it your loved one gets the daily nutrition they need.  Moreover, meals are served restaurant-style in our beautiful dining room as we believe breaking bread together provides far more than physical nutrients but bonds us as family and friends.  We also help with another common problem many seniors experience when living alone, which is forgetting to or improperly taking medications.  We solve this by offering medication management services.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Billings offers active seniors an independent living option with 32 cottages and 72 stylish suites.  In addition, our Reflections Neighborhood provides individualized care for those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia.  Please contact us for more information and to set up a tour.

MorningStar of Billings’ foundation is based on the mission to honor God, value seniors and invest in our staff to create a unique senior living experience.  Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide independent living, assisted living and memory care. Finding Care for a Loved One With Alzheimer’s Disease

February 13, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Dementia Care

Alzheimer’s is one of those progressive diseases where needs continue to evolve and change, and it is important to address those changes with the appropriate care. The Alzheimer’s Association advises families that there is not a one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to Alzheimer's care; but rather to take a close look at your own unique family situation. They also say to recognize decisions regarding care are not easy.

Some of the options families may consider include in-home care, respite care, all-day adult centers, hospice care and long-term care. All these choices require time to explore to ensure they provide the level of care a loved one needs. Experts recommend trying to include the person with Alzheimer’s into the decision making process as much as possible.

The Alzheimer’s Association says often a person in the early stages of the disease can live alone but in the middle stages typically 24/7 care is needed. During the most advanced stages, intensive around-the-clock care is required. If it is time for long-term care, you will want the best care possible. Experts say look for a memory care community that treats the whole person and has an environment in which they can feel independent and safe.

A Place for Mom, an online senior living referral service, offers questions to help decide when it may be time for a family to consider long term-care in a memory community. Some of those questions include:

  • Is your loved one agitated or aggressive?

  • Is your aging relative withdrawn or nervous?

  • Are their hygiene needs met?

  • Does your loved one wander?

  • Are their living conditions safe?

  • Are their medications properly managed?

  • Is your loved one well-nourished?

  • Have you started to feel caregiver burnout?

  • Is caregiving affecting your health?

  • Are you and your family safe?

MorningStar at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs offers comprehensive assisted living dementia care which supports residents with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. MorningStar’s holistic approach is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and uses Montessori-based therapy techniques. As dementia care specialists, we feel it is our privilege–our calling–to walk alongside residents and their families during this unexpected and challenging journey.
