Activity Ideas for People Living With Alzheimer’s Disease

January 12, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

An article in the online publication, Medical News Today, suggests activities that can provide a person with Alzheimer’s disease a sense of normality and to help enrich their life. A study from 2020 reported meaningful activities are important for those with dementia as they can improve both psychological and physical health.

One suggestion of an indoor activity is to sit with the person and look through photo albums of family together. This is an effective way to engage the person and is typically enjoyable. Another relaxing activity can be listening to the person’s favorite music; or if they are more hands-on, do an arts and crafts project. Playing an instrument has much the same calming effect.

Researchers say studies show knitting and crocheting to be calming activities for those with Alzheimer’s. Not only does it help reduce anxiety and depression, but the person gets a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, done within a group setting, it can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. Routine things like daily chores can also be comforting and help the person feel like they are a contributing member of the family/group.

Experts say outdoor activities are important to a person’s overall health and well-being. One area of research for those having dementia includes therapeutic gardening. Data shows gardening can improve a person’s emotional and cognitive state, increase engagement and reduce anxiety.

Other healthy outdoor activities include walking in the park (getting back to nature is good for all of us) and feeding the birds. If the person uses a mobility aid such as a walker or cane, be sure to have them use it. The same goes for wearing good-fitting walking shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests keeping to a routine each day is helpful; as well as offering other promising ideas worth considering. In addition, they say to remember everyone is different, and if an activity does not seem to be to their liking, try something else. Most importantly activities should be those the person enjoys.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we provide compassionate, experienced care to those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Our home is a safe, peaceful place where residents’ independence is encouraged with inviting common areas and clear wayfinding.  In addition, purposeful activities keep residents engaged including physical exercise, music, dance, art, and aromatherapy designed to stimulate or calm as the situation requires.  Please visit our website for more information about trusted memory care assisted living in Colorado Springs.

Grieving for a Family Member With Alzheimer's Disease

January 10, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

When a loved one is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, it is upsetting news for all.  Family members may quickly start experiencing feelings of grief as they recognize their life is about to be changed by the disease and are uneasy about what the future will hold.  Most are left with questions about what to expect next.

As Alzheimer’s begins to take away the person we know and love, the Alzheimer’s Association explains that, “you’ll mourn him or her and may experience the different phases of grieving: denial, anger, guilt, sadness and acceptance.”  They remind us that feelings of grief do not come in a specific order but rather we go in and out of the various stages.

Feelings of denial include unrealistically hoping the person is not ill or expecting them to get better.  Others try to convince themselves their loved one has not changed or try to normalize and make excuses for their behaviors.  Anger may include being frustrated with the person or feeling abandoned.  You may also experience feelings of resentment with the demands of caregiving and/or resent others who are not helping with care.

Guilt includes having unrealistic thoughts about what you should have done or feeling guilty if you do not visit every day.  A spouse that is well and still able to enjoy life may feel guilty that their husband or wife is no longer able to do so.  Others may have negative feelings such as wishing the person would die or go away.

The Alzheimer’s Association says you need to face both your positive as well as negative feelings.  They also say to be prepared to go through feelings of loss more than once as the disease progresses.  Remember your grief is a part of your journey, and if you need help, talk with someone about your feelings.

MorningStar at Bear Creek provides compassionate, individualized care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our care addresses the needs of our residents starting with the very design of our community to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals.  For memory care Colorado Springs families can count on, please contact us or visit our website for more information.

Enjoy Delicious Meals at MorningStar of Fort Collins

December 25, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

At MorningStar of Fort Collins, we understand the importance of gathering as a community to “break bread” each day.  We believe food is a healing medicine unlike any other, and when our residents sit down to a delicious meal served restaurant-style, it creates lasting bonds and fellowship within our “family.”

We recognize that good nutrition is especially important to the wellbeing of seniors, which is why MorningStar meals are prepared largely from scratch and feature the freshest ingredients from high-quality producers, locally sourced when possible.  Menu offerings are designed by our Executive Chef and include daily and weekly specials as well as a la carte items. Dining is available all day which means you can eat when you are hungry and not according to a rigid schedule.

As a resident, you will be treated to seasonal menus and special holiday feasts such as those we enjoy at Thanksgiving and Christmas.  Also, our Chef modifies menus and recipes to accommodate residents’ changing needs and tastes.  Moreover, you can easily self-manage any dietary restrictions as we offer a wide selection of low sodium, sugar-free, no sugar added, and low-fat foods.

MorningStar of Fort Collins also believes that nutrient-rich ingredients can help stimulate the appetite and support brain health.  Therefore, we prepare meals using BrainWise super foods that contain a high concentration of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds.  Super foods include acai, leafy dark greens, dark chocolates, berries, and fish, nuts and other foods high in Omega 3 fats.

For our memory care residents, food is as much about Community as it is about Nutrition. To encourage appetites, our team members sit and share meals with residents, and many are served “family style” as they are in private homes.  Much of our food is modified out of respect for residents’ somewhat compromised eating abilities and includes finger foods, texture-modified diets and easy-to-recognize balanced meals that taste as good as they look.

Located on the southeast side of the city, MorningStar of Fort Collins is convenient to medical facilities, shopping, restaurants and other services.  We have 55 stylish suites for assisted living and another 24 suites in our Reflections Neighborhood devoted to those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. For more information about exceptional memory care or assisted living in Fort Collins, please visit our website.

MorningStar at Fort Collins’ memory care revolves around comforting and caring for our most tender residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. We start with a physical space designed to enhance residents’ quality of life with safe, inviting common areas encouraging independence. Residents stay active with a gentle flow of activities including art, dance, physical exercise, special events, and scheduled outings.

Once a resident joins our MorningStar family, we meet with them and their family to get to know as much as we can about them including their history, vocation, talents, and preferences. From there we create a daily routine designed to stimulate or calm as a situation requires. Residents are also treated to tempting meals consisting of finger foods and family-style dining for a stress-free, companionable dining experience.

As dementia care specialists, our approach and philosophy to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  Our program provides us with an insightful and intentional way to support the memory-impaired and their families.  All team members, regardless of their position, receive Lavender Sky training, which includes a deeper understanding of the disease and communication techniques to use with memory-impaired residents.  It also includes training in environmental safety and security as well as holistic solutions to challenging behaviors.  Additionally, our devoted team feels privileged to serve, and understands every person deserves to be treated with the utmost respect and dignity.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the Most Common Form of Dementia

December 11, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

Many of us, especially seniors, have heard or known someone with Alzheimer’s disease and have an idea of the devastation it causes. While there are other types of diseases categorized as dementia, Alzheimer’s is by far the most common form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. You should know dementia is not actually a specific disease but refers to a decline in a person’s mental ability to such a degree it interferes with their daily life.

It is also important to understand dementia is not a normal condition of aging but rather caused by damage to brain cells that affect a person’s memory, reasoning and other cognitive skills including an ability to communicate. There are several types of clinical dementia including: Alzheimer’s disease; vascular dementia; dementia with Lewy Body; and frontotemporal dementia. Mixed dementia is the term used when a person has both Alzheimer’s and another form of dementia, which is causing their mental decline.

The Alzheimer’s Association says the “most common early symptom of Alzheimer’s is trouble remembering new information because the disease typically impacts the part of the brain associated with learning first.” As the disease progresses, the person is robbed of many other abilities such as speaking, swallowing and walking.

To help get the proper diagnosis and rule out other causes that may be treatable such as side effects from a medication, it is important to see your doctor. If warranted, they may have you see a specialist that can do further testing.

MorningStar at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs provides memory care assisted living to those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. We are a team of compassionate professionals who feel privileged to care for our special residents. We also consider supporting family members as part of our job and recognize that a diagnosis of dementia is traumatizing for all involved. See Your Doctor if You Are Experiencing Memory Problems

November 08, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

If you or a loved one is experiencing troubling memory problems, it is important to see your healthcare provider. While there is no cure for Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases, there are steps you can take to mitigate or delay the onset of the disease.

The Alzheimer’s Association explains, “Physicians and other medical professionals are a central part of the care team of a person living with dementia. Along with other members — which may include family, friends or others — they work to provide support throughout the course of the disease.” Therefore, one of the best ways to ensure optimal care is to honestly communicate with your physician.

To establish a good relationship with the doctor, a person or family member should take some time to prepare for the visit. Helpful tips from the Alzheimer’s Association include:

  • Document any changes in your health, including your mood, memory and behaviors.

  • Make a note of any changes you’ve noticed since your last appointment.

  • Create a list of current prescriptions and over-the-counter medications.

  • Write down any vitamins or supplements you’ve added to your medication regimen.

  • Make a list of questions you want to ask.

Writing down questions you have beforehand makes sure you don’t forget them, and don’t be reluctant to ask questions if you don’t understand something. The Alzheimer’s Association National Early-Stage Advisory Group, made up of men and women in the early stages of Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia, put together a list of questions to help others make the most out of a doctor’s visit. Questions range from asking about the type of tests used to make a diagnosis, what to expect from the disease, and what type of treatments may be used. When seeing a specialist, ask how familiar they are with caring for patients with Alzheimer’s disease.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, our community is devoted to the care of those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our comprehensive care supports residents and their families with services, wellness programs and activities essential to quality of life. MorningStar’s holistic approach is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky,” and uses Montessori-based therapy techniques. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional memory care in Colorado Springs.

Early Warning Signs of Alzheimer’s Disease

October 09, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

Most of us are familiar with the forgetfulness and confusion Alzheimer’s disease causes. Especially in the early stages, family and friends start noticing the person is constantly repeating themselves and/or forgetting where they put things. However, experts say there are other commonly occurring signs of a serious problem.

One of those early warning signs can be having trouble navigating and even getting lost in familiar places. A decline in spatial awareness as well as vision problems can cause a person in the early stages of Alzheimer’s to become confused in new places and have trouble identifying objects and people.

Spatial and visual issues may include looking at an object and not seeing it clearly for what it is. Examples could be a person sees a blue floor as water or a dark spot in a rug as a hole in the floor. They may be unable to tell if their house is to the left of them or to judge distances accurately. Some people may mistake their child for their spouse or another relative.

These misconceptions and misidentifications are caused by damage to the neurons, which are “cells in your brain that communicate with each other and with the rest of your body. Alzheimer’s causes damage to neurons.”  Researchers say they are not sure if the problems are due to impairment to the spatial reasoning part of the brain or damage to the temporal and parietal lobes.

There are things caregivers can do to help a person navigate their surroundings more easily such as removing clutter from the person’s living space and labeling items. Keeping things in the same place is another helpful tip as habit is a strong instinct. IF you are out with the person and they look confused or frightened, stop what you are doing, and calmly explain where you are as well as listen to their perspective of what they are feeling.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we specialize in providing individualized memory care assisted living for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our community is equipped to care for residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages.  Every aspect of our community caters to those with memory impairment with purposeful activities, trained caregivers, easy-to-eat meals, security and more. Is a Loved One Having Serious Memory Problems?

September 27, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

If your mom or dad or another loved one is having serious memory problems, we have some suggestions to help you navigate through this trying time.  Medical experts recommend doing some research on Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, to educate yourself on how the disease is diagnosed, stages of the disease, and some of what your family can expect if it is.  You may want to visit websites such as the Alzheimer’s Association as well as online support groups for family members dealing with the disease for suggestions on how to best prepare and support your parents.

Also, remember it may not be dementia as there are medical conditions, reactions to medications, and nutritional and hormonal issues that can cause dementia-like symptoms.  Therefore, you need to sit down and have a talk with your parents about the problems they are having and the need to make an appointment with their healthcare provider for a full medical exam.

Experts say when you are ready to have the “conversation,” be honest and try to keep your voice calm.  Pick a time and place where you will not be interrupted and be sure to include in your homework different care options in case they ask.  Also, be ready to talk less and listen more as they may have also been worried about some of the changes they have been experiencing.  However, keep in mind it is common for a person to be confused, in denial, and/or withdraw.

At MorningStar of Fort Collins, we understand a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another dementia related disease is devastating, and we want area families to know we are here to help shoulder the burden. Every aspect of our Reflections Neighborhood caters to our most tender residents with purposeful activities, trained caregivers, food service, and security. Our comprehensive care also includes assisting families to better understand and cope with the disease. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional memory care or assisted living in Fort Collins, CO.

If mom or dad, or another loved one suffers from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, you want the finest care for them. MorningStar at Bear Creek is just such a place. As part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, founded in 2003, we are committed to using best-practices including Montessori-based therapy techniques to provide comprehensive, compassionate care for our residents.

MorningStar’s philosophy and approach to memory care is encompassed under the expanse of possibilities we call “Lavender Sky.”  By utilizing our extensive understanding of dementia, it provides the tools to empower and equip our team to advance our vision and mission of providing a more insightful way to support the memory-impaired and their families.

All our employees receive training in the program as we understand knowledge provides greater wisdom and insight into interacting with our residents.  The eight hours of training includes the pathology behind the disease as well as communication techniques, and holistic solutions to dining, safety and challenging behaviors.

Moving a parent into a memory care community is often a difficult decision to make. However, once a family chooses MorningStar, we are there every step of the way to walk your loved one through the transition. Our first step is to get to know all we can about the individual such as their background, talents and personal preferences by using a tool called “To Know Me is To Love Me.” From there, we create a specialized, individualized service plan in accordance with the family.

Every aspect of our care addresses the needs of our special residents starting with the very design of our community to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals. Families also get peace of mind knowing residents receive 24/7 care services and medication management as well as access to licensed nurses.   Please contact us or visit our website to learn more about trusted memory care in Colorado Springs.

The Top Ten Signs of Parkinson’s Disease

September 11, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

The Medical News Today says too many people do not get diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease (PD) and related neurodegenerative diseases until they are in the advanced stages; thereby limiting their prevention and treatment options. Medical professionals say although the disease has typically been categorized as primarily a movement disorder, new research finds executive function may be a major factor in determining its progression. Executive function is defined as a broad group of mental skills enabling people to complete tasks and interact with others. Disordered executive function impairs a person’s ability to organize and manage behavior.

According to the Parkinson’s Foundation the top 10 signs of the disease are:

  •  Tremors

  •  Small handwriting

  •  Loss of smell

  • Trouble sleeping

  • Trouble moving or walking

  • Constipation

  • A soft or low voice

  • Masked face (looking depressed or mad)

  • Dizziness or fainting

  • Stooping or hunching over

If you have any of these signs, you should see your healthcare provider. He or she may refer you to a neurologist, who specializes in the brain as well as other specialists. Experts say there is not a one-size-fits-all treatment, but rather your treatment will be tailored to address your own special needs and is usually a team effort. Based on your symptoms, treatment may include seeing a physical, speech or occupational therapist; medications and exercises.

Research also suggests a strong link between those who experience what is known as “minor hallucinations” early on in the disease to a more rapid loss of executive function as well as cognitive decline in the later stages. Minor hallucinations involve the senses – sight, hearing, touch, smell, taste. These include seeing someone who is not there or seeing a face or object in something like a cloud or a carpet. It is important to let your doctor know if you are experiencing any hallucinations.

Pet Therapy for People With Dementia

August 03, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

Pet therapy (also known as animal-assisted therapy) is used for those with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia to alleviate feelings of boredom, loneliness and helpless. Dr. William Thomas, a Harvard trained geriatrician and author of “The Eden Alternative,” said bringing in children, plants and animals helps to invigorate long-term care by “incorporating companionship, a sense of purpose, variety and spontaneity into the day-to-day experience of aged care residents.”

While studies show therapy dogs and other animals are useful in stimulating social interaction and easing agitation in dementia patients, experts say it should be done with specially trained pets to get the most benefit. Moreover, the animal should be matched to the setting as well as to the person. Pet therapists say dogs are generally the easiest to train as they are comfortable interacting with a variety of people.

The benefits of animal therapy to dementia patients include the unconditional love and acceptance animals freely give out as well as the physical touch from the pet contact. Also, these relationships do not require much in the way of communication skills, which are often difficult for someone with Alzheimer’s disease. Researchers say other benefits of pet therapy include an increase in physical activity and an unexpected improvement in a person’s appetite after a visit from an animal as well as an overall calming effect.

MorningStar at Bear Creek provides compassionate, loving care for those with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.  MorningStar’s approach to memory care is designed to nurture, support and respect the essence of the individual regardless of the level of memory loss.  Our wellness program includes activities that leverage the power of art, music, dance, aromatherapy and animals to heal and comfort residents.  For trusted memory care in Colorado Springs, please contact us or visit our website for more information.
