If You Are Incapacitated, an Advance Directive Gives You a Voice

March 25, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living, Dementia Care

An advance directive is a legal document giving you a voice involving medical decisions in the event you are incapacitated. Many people shy away from creating such documents as they fail to realize how important they are, and mistakenly worry they are signing away their lives, and/or don’t like thinking about being so ill they are unable to make decisions.

Advance care planning documents may include a living will, power of attorney and health care proxy. By planning ahead, they guide decisions made on your behalf if you are unable, and suffer from an incurable, irreversible illness, condition or disease determined to be terminal. Living wills specify the kind of medical treatment desired and many simply express the desire to not be given life-sustaining measures that only serve to prolong a person’s death. Specific details may be regarding care including the use of pain medications, antibiotics, hydration, feeding and the use of cardiopulmonary resuscitation or ventilators.

A health care proxy is someone designated to express your wishes for medical care and has the same rights you would in requesting or refusing treatment. A durable power of attorney document names a person to act on your behalf if you are incapacitated and gives them the power to make financial decisions.

The Harvard Medical School reports on some of the myths people have regarding advance care directives. They say you need to realize more care is not always better but can prolong the dying process without respect for quality of life or comfort. Refusing life support does not mean you are committing suicide but rather allowing your medical problem to be the cause of your death. Moreover, refusing life-extending treatment does not mean you are refusing comfort measures for pain management and symptoms. Talk to your family and doctor about your medical preferences, and be sure each has a copy of your advance directive documents.

If You’ve Ever Had Chicken Pox, You Are at Risk of Getting Shingles

March 25, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

We have all heard about shingles but many of us are confused as to whether it is contagious and what are the chances we will get it. Experts explain shingles is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, which is the same virus that causes chicken pox. Moreover, if you had chickenpox as a child, you are at risk of getting shingles sometime in your life.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports one in three people develop shingles during their lifetime. While this means many will never get shingles, some people get it more than once and others can develop flare-ups periodically throughout their lives. Dr. Michael Urban, a senior lecturer and director of the Doctor of Occupational Therapy program at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, explains flair-ups can be a full range of symptoms or barely noticeable.

Statistics show in recent years younger people are getting shingles but typically the disease occurs in those over 50 years of age and the risk increases the older we get or with various health conditions. People undergoing cancer treatment as well as being ill or under a lot of stress are all at a higher risk for shingles.

Symptoms vary and include feeling like you may have the flu, and/or a red, itchy, painful rash or fluid-filled blisters. Before the rash appears, you may feel an uncomfortable sensation, numbness or tingling, and may be the only symptoms you ever experience. Experts say shingles are not contagious but you can give someone chickenpox if they have never had it; but only if they come in direct contact with the fluid in the blisters such as through a washcloth or bed sheet. To ensure your safety, talk to your doctor about getting a shingles vaccine if you are over the age of 50 or suffer from chronic diseases like renal failure, COPD and diabetes among others.

Preventative Health Screenings Every Senior Should Consider

February 23, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

As we age, staying on top of our health through preventative screenings becomes increasingly important. These screenings can catch potential health issues early, when they’re most treatable, contributing significantly to seniors’ longevity and quality of life. For residents in assisted living Fort Collins and those receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, staying informed about which health screenings are necessary is a crucial part of their healthcare routine. Here’s a guide to essential preventative health screenings for seniors.

1. Blood Pressure Screenings

High blood pressure is a common condition among seniors, often leading to more serious health issues such as heart disease and stroke. Regular blood pressure checks are easy, quick, and can save lives. Facilities offering Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins and assisted living Fort Collins ensure that residents receive routine blood pressure screenings as part of their comprehensive care plans.

2. Cholesterol Checks

Like blood pressure screenings, cholesterol checks are vital in assessing the risk of cardiovascular diseases. High levels of bad cholesterol can clog arteries, leading to heart attacks or strokes. Seniors should have their cholesterol levels checked regularly to manage any risks proactively.

3. Diabetes Screenings

Diabetes screenings are essential, especially since the risk of type 2 diabetes increases with age. Early detection through blood sugar tests can prevent complications such as nerve damage, kidney disease, and vision problems. Assisted living Fort Collins communities often provide dietary management and regular monitoring for residents at risk or with diabetes.

4. Cancer Screenings

Several types of cancer screenings are recommended for seniors, including those for breast, colorectal, prostate, and lung cancers. The specific screenings recommended can depend on individual risk factors, including family history and lifestyle. Discussing which cancer screenings are appropriate with a healthcare provider is crucial for early detection and treatment.

5. Bone Density Scan

Osteoporosis, a condition that weakens bones and makes them more prone to fracture, is more common in seniors. A bone density scan can assess bone health and the risk of osteoporosis, allowing for early intervention to strengthen bones and prevent fractures.

6. Vision and Hearing Tests

Regular vision and hearing tests help seniors maintain their quality of life and independence. Early detection of conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, and hearing loss means that treatments can be more effective, preserving these vital senses longer.

Preventative health screenings are a cornerstone of maintaining wellness in senior years. For those in assisted living Fort Collins and receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, these screenings are integrated into their care, ensuring they remain as healthy as possible. By staying proactive with health screenings, seniors can enjoy their golden years with peace of mind, knowing they are taking the best possible steps to maintain their health and well-being.

Medications That Increase Fall Risk

February 09, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living, Dementia Care

The Harvard Medical School reports it is estimated 1 in 3 people over age 65 will fall each year, and every 19 minutes a senior dies from a fall-related injury. Statistics show women are at higher risk for a fall but men are more likely to die from their injuries than women.

Seniors should be aware of several things that can affect balance and lead to a fall. These include certain medications, inner ear problems, foot pain, weight changes and vitamin D deficiency. Anti-hypertensive medications prescribed to keep blood pressure under control or decrease the risk of stroke and heart failure are all known to affect balance. A common side effect is orthostatic hypotension, a condition that happens if blood pressure gets too low; and results in lightheadedness, faintness and dizziness especially when the person attempts to stand from a sitting or lying down position.

Medications that suppress the central nervous system may also result in a fall as they reduce alertness, and slow reactions and movements. Some of these types of drugs include anti-anxiety medications like diazepam (Valium) and lorazepam (Ativan). Additionally, antihistamines can cause drowsiness and are used in over-the-counter sleep aids like Nyquil and Sominex, or combined with acetaminophen in products like Tylenol PM.

If you or a loved one takes medication to treat an overactive bladder or tricyclic antidepressants to help lessen chronic pain, they too can affect a person’s balance. Other drugs that increase the risk of a fall are opioids such as codeine, hydrocodone and oxycodone.

Downsizing Offers a New Adventure for Older Adults

February 09, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Instead of feeling sad about moving from a home that perhaps is too large or costly for you to care for, think about moving into a smaller apartment or condo as the start of a new adventure.   However, to do it right, you should be organized.  Experts suggest you only take with you the things that bring joy and find ways to get rid of the rest.  If that piece of advice still finds you with way too much stuff, then take a moment to picture how you want your new life to look.  Is it a sleek, minimalist décor or more like a smaller, compact version of your present home?

Some simple solutions to help you decorate your new apartment include bringing with you or buying multi-purpose furniture.  This could include upholstered storage benches or cubes, nesting coffee tables, extension desks, and sized-down sofa and chairs more suited to a compact footprint.  Attractive baskets and storage carts also help to make a small place feel more organized.

If you want to use some of your current furniture, measure it, and then draw up a floor plan of the new place and lay it all out to see how it will fit.  In addition, since your new place is smaller, it will most likely not have as many closets as your old home so go through your clothing and only take the items you truly enjoy wearing.  Give the rest to charity.  Lastly, consider the amenities at your new place.  For example if they have an onsite fitness center, you probably do not need to bring along your own in-home treadmill or stationary bike.

At MorningStar of Billings, our beautiful senior community offers stylish cottages and suites that are ready to move into and just require your furnishings and personal items. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, fitness room, billiards and game room, life enrichment room, raised garden beds and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle.  If you are looking for independent or assisted living in Billings, MT, we encourage you to contact us or visit our website for more information.

Managing Chronic Conditions in Cold Weather

January 29, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Winter can pose additional challenges for seniors with chronic conditions. The colder weather often exacerbates symptoms and requires extra care and management. For residents in assisted living Fort Collins and receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, it’s particularly important to have strategies in place for managing these conditions during the colder months. Here’s how seniors can stay on top of their chronic conditions when the temperature drops.

1. Stay Warm and Comfortable

Maintaining a warm and comfortable environment is essential for managing chronic conditions. For seniors in assisted living Fort Collins, it’s crucial to ensure that living spaces are adequately heated and free from drafts. Wearing layers of clothing and using extra blankets can help maintain body heat.

2. Regular Health Monitoring

Colder weather can affect various chronic conditions, from arthritis to cardiovascular diseases. Regular monitoring of health indicators is vital, especially for residents in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins. Blood pressure monitors, glucose meters, and other devices should be used consistently to track health.

3. Stay Active Indoors

Physical activity is important for managing many chronic conditions. In assisted living Fort Collins, indoor exercise programs can help maintain mobility and strength, which is especially beneficial during the winter months. Activities like stretching, chair yoga, or light aerobics are suitable for indoor environments.

4. Nutritious Diet

A healthy diet plays a significant role in managing chronic conditions. Winter can be a time when people eat less fresh produce, so incorporating fruits and vegetables into meals is important for seniors, particularly in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins. Nutrient-rich foods can support overall health and help manage chronic conditions.

5. Medication Management

Proper medication management is critical in cold weather when health risks can increase. For those in assisted living Fort Collins, it’s important to have a system in place to ensure medications are taken correctly and on time. Automated pill dispensers or medication management services can be helpful tools.

6. Access to Healthcare Services

Easy access to healthcare services is essential for seniors with chronic conditions. In Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, transportation services to medical appointments and telehealth options ensure that residents receive the necessary care without having to venture out into harsh weather conditions.

7. Mental Health Support

The winter months can also impact mental health. Seniors, especially in assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, should have access to mental health support to cope with the potential increased feelings of isolation or depression during this season.

Staying Ahead of Chronic Conditions in Winter

For seniors in assisted living Fort Collins and those receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, effectively managing chronic conditions during winter requires a multifaceted approach. By ensuring a warm living environment, regular health monitoring, indoor physical activity, a nutritious diet, proper medication management, easy access to healthcare services, and mental health support, seniors can maintain their health and well-being during the colder months.

Preparation and proactive management are key to ensuring that seniors can navigate the winter season safely and comfortably while keeping their chronic conditions well-controlled. Remember, the cold weather doesn’t have to exacerbate health challenges. With the right care and strategies, residents of assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins can continue to lead a healthy and fulfilling lifestyle all year round.

Winter Walking: Staying Steady on Slippery Surfaces

January 26, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Winter can be a beautiful but challenging season, especially for seniors. The icy and slippery conditions increase the risk of falls, making it crucial for those in assisted living Fort Collins and receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins to take extra precautions. Here are some essential tips for staying steady and safe while walking during the winter months.

1. Wear Proper Footwear

One of the most important aspects of winter safety is wearing the right shoes. For residents of assisted living Fort Collins, choosing footwear with non-slip soles and good traction can make a significant difference. Shoes with rubber soles and deep treads are ideal for preventing slips on icy surfaces.

2. Use Walking Aids if Necessary

For those who need them, especially in settings like Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, walking aids such as canes or walkers equipped with ice picks can provide extra stability. It’s important to ensure that these aids are suitable for winter conditions.

3. Take Slow, Short Steps

When navigating slippery surfaces, taking slow, short steps can help maintain balance. Seniors in assisted living Fort Collins should be encouraged to take their time and avoid rushing, as hurried movements increase the risk of falls.

4. Keep Walkways Clear

Ensuring that walkways are clear of snow and ice is crucial in preventing falls. In Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins and other senior living communities, maintenance staff should regularly salt and shovel walkways. However, seniors should also be vigilant and report any hazardous areas to staff.

5. Stay Physically Active

Maintaining physical strength and balance is key to preventing falls. Residents of assisted living Fort Collins can engage in indoor exercises to improve their stability, flexibility, and overall fitness, which are crucial for safe winter walking.

6. Be Aware of Your Surroundings

Paying attention to the environment is essential when walking outside in winter. Seniors, including those in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, should be cautious of black ice and uneven surfaces, and avoid walking outside during poor weather conditions when possible.

7. Plan Your Route

Planning the walking route in advance can help seniors avoid potentially slippery areas. In assisted living Fort Collins, staff can assist residents in choosing the safest paths for their outdoor activities.

8. Dress Appropriately

Besides footwear, dressing in warm, layered clothing is important for comfort and safety during winter walks. This is especially relevant for seniors in Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, as proper clothing can also prevent hypothermia.

Staying Safe on Winter Walks

For seniors in assisted living Fort Collins and those receiving Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins, following these winter walking tips can greatly reduce the risk of falls and injuries. By wearing appropriate footwear, using walking aids if necessary, taking careful steps, and being aware of their surroundings, seniors can safely enjoy the beauty of winter while staying active and independent. Additionally, the support from staff in senior living communities ensures that walkways are safe and that residents are well-equipped for winter conditions. Remember, safety during winter walks is not just about avoiding falls; it’s about enjoying the season with confidence and peace of mind. With the right preparations and precautions, seniors in assisted living Fort Collins and Alzheimer’s care Fort Collins can navigate slippery surfaces safely and continue to enjoy the outdoors, even during the colder months.

Activity Ideas for People Living With Alzheimer’s Disease

January 12, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

An article in the online publication, Medical News Today, suggests activities that can provide a person with Alzheimer’s disease a sense of normality and to help enrich their life. A study from 2020 reported meaningful activities are important for those with dementia as they can improve both psychological and physical health.

One suggestion of an indoor activity is to sit with the person and look through photo albums of family together. This is an effective way to engage the person and is typically enjoyable. Another relaxing activity can be listening to the person’s favorite music; or if they are more hands-on, do an arts and crafts project. Playing an instrument has much the same calming effect.

Researchers say studies show knitting and crocheting to be calming activities for those with Alzheimer’s. Not only does it help reduce anxiety and depression, but the person gets a sense of accomplishment. Moreover, done within a group setting, it can lessen feelings of loneliness and isolation. Routine things like daily chores can also be comforting and help the person feel like they are a contributing member of the family/group.

Experts say outdoor activities are important to a person’s overall health and well-being. One area of research for those having dementia includes therapeutic gardening. Data shows gardening can improve a person’s emotional and cognitive state, increase engagement and reduce anxiety.

Other healthy outdoor activities include walking in the park (getting back to nature is good for all of us) and feeding the birds. If the person uses a mobility aid such as a walker or cane, be sure to have them use it. The same goes for wearing good-fitting walking shoes.

The Alzheimer’s Association suggests keeping to a routine each day is helpful; as well as offering other promising ideas worth considering. In addition, they say to remember everyone is different, and if an activity does not seem to be to their liking, try something else. Most importantly activities should be those the person enjoys.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we provide compassionate, experienced care to those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. The Move to Assisted Living at MorningStar of Billings

January 08, 2024 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living, MorningStar of Billings may be your answer. Along with beautiful surroundings, we provide an extensive range of amenities, wellness programs, care services and more.

When a loved one needs more care than they can get in their own home, it may be time to start thinking about a move to assisted living.  If your family is new to the concept of senior living and all it means, please know that MorningStar will work with you every step of the way to help you make informed decisions, and make the eventual move-in process easier.

To start with, we understand that for your parent or elderly relative, the move is a major lifestyle transition, which is why we approach each move-in with great sensitivity.  One way we do this is to try and nurture a relationship from the start that reinforces the positive aspects of community life and tries to help the person envision the many possibilities of a new adventure.

Once your family puts down a deposit to secure a chosen suite, our “House to Home” plan goes into full swing.  This starts by collecting pertinent information, agreements and permissions inherent to the move-in including a medical assessment and physician’s care plan for each new assisted living and memory care resident.

On a more practical level, we offer packing tips including what items are most important to bring such as furnishings and personal belongings that are most significant emotionally, nostalgically as well as functionally.  We want the resident’s new “home” to bring them comfort and joy, which is why we suggest, if possible, furnishings should be arranged similar to their prior residence.  Keep in mind; it is especially helpful to those with low vision or cognitive impairment.

This is just a start of the on-going support we extend to new residents and their families.  We are ready to answer any questions you may have and direct you to our website for contact information as well as other pertinent details.  MorningStar of Billings’ entire team is engaged in finding ways to build a true family, one loving relationship at a time.

MorningStar of Billings’ mission statement of “to honor, to value, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Habits That Are Dangerous for Cognitive Health

December 22, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Our modern-day lifestyle encourages behaviors that are bad for the health of our brain as well as other parts of our body. Research finds the following four habits are especially dangerous for cognitive health. They are sitting, lack of socializing, inadequate sleep, and chronic stress. The good news is they are habits we can easily change.

Many of our workplaces and entertainment pursuits include sitting for long periods of time. In fact, a 2018 study published in the PLOS One reports people aged 45 to 75 sit for an average of 6 1⁄2 hours a day. Researchers found “sitting too much is linked to changes in a section of the brain essential to memory.” Using MRI scans, they looked at the region of the brain known to make new memories called the medial temporal lobe (MTL). Comparing the number of hours a day the person spent sitting, those who sat the most had the thinnest MTL regions, a precursor to cognitive decline and dementia. To help improve the functioning of your MTL, the study’s authors recommend getting up and moving at least every 30 minutes. Your activity could be a quick round of squats or pushups or a walk around your front yard, or something similar for a few minutes.

Lack of socialization can also lead to a thinning of the MTL as several studies link loneliness to a higher risk of dementia. Experts say you don’t have to completely change your lifestyle but rather try to routinely connect with three or four family members or friends. The number of social connections is less important than the degree of meaningful interactions.

Other healthy cognitive behaviors include getting at least seven to eight hours of sleep each night and reducing your level of stress. Research shows chronic stress “can kill brain cells and shrink the prefrontal cortex, the area responsible for memory and learning.” To manage stress, experts suggest breathing techniques and practicing mindfulness.

Alzheimer’s Disease is the Most Common Form of Dementia

December 11, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care, Assisted Living

Many of us, especially seniors, have heard or known someone with Alzheimer’s disease and have an idea of the devastation it causes. While there are other types of diseases categorized as dementia, Alzheimer’s is by far the most common form of dementia accounting for 60 to 80 percent of cases. You should know dementia is not actually a specific disease but refers to a decline in a person’s mental ability to such a degree it interferes with their daily life.

It is also important to understand dementia is not a normal condition of aging but rather caused by damage to brain cells that affect a person’s memory, reasoning and other cognitive skills including an ability to communicate. There are several types of clinical dementia including: Alzheimer’s disease; vascular dementia; dementia with Lewy Body; and frontotemporal dementia. Mixed dementia is the term used when a person has both Alzheimer’s and another form of dementia, which is causing their mental decline.

The Alzheimer’s Association says the “most common early symptom of Alzheimer’s is trouble remembering new information because the disease typically impacts the part of the brain associated with learning first.” As the disease progresses, the person is robbed of many other abilities such as speaking, swallowing and walking.

To help get the proper diagnosis and rule out other causes that may be treatable such as side effects from a medication, it is important to see your doctor. If warranted, they may have you see a specialist that can do further testing.

MorningStar at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs provides memory care assisted living to those with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Gift Ideas for a Loved One with Dementia

December 04, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

If you want to get something special for mom or dad or another loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease, it can be challenging to figure out a good gift. This is where the Internet can lend a hand with a range of items designed to enhance your loved one’s quality of life.

Dementia care specialists say it can take a little more time and some creativity but there are many great gift ideas. One idea is personalized gifts or memory-filled ones. A photo album filled with pictures of the person surrounded by people important to them, or a picture book from a place they loved to visit. A coffee mug personalized with a photo or a cozy throw filled with favorite family pictures are also good ideas.

Music from their younger years, show tunes and old movies are sure to make them smile and can be a good way to spend an afternoon together listening to their new gifts. Coloring books filled with pictures of things they love such as animals or flowers, and a set of new markers or crayons, and easy-to-do crafts are also fun to do together.

Another item targeted to people with Alzheimer’s or dementia is therapy stuffed animals.  Designed to meet their special needs, one example is a teddy bear that comes with a few classic songs but has room to load a person’s favorite tunes (up to a 1,000 songs). Cuddly robotic cat and dog stuffed animals have a calming, soothing effect on people in the middle and later stages of Alzheimer’s disease. Research shows they can help the person remember a time in their life when their purpose included caring for others.

Along with independent and assisted living, MorningStar of Billings provides compassionate and loving care to those suffering from memory impairment. The Reflections Neighborhood is meticulously designed to accommodate the special needs of memory care residents, allowing them as much independence as possible.   Our specially-trained care team understands that the essence of the person still exists despite the memory loss, and will strive every day to connect with and nurture that essence. Please contact us or visit our website for more information.

MorningStar is guided by a culture rooted in our mission of honoring God, valuing seniors, and investing in our team, which allows us to deliver services with warmth, sincerity and depth of purpose. Arizona’s Most Trusted Choice in Assisted Living for Seniors

November 29, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

MorningStar offers seniors some of the best senior living Glendale has to offer based on these three reasons.

Are you looking for a senior living community in Arizona that you can trust to provide personalized care for your parents or loved ones? When looking for the best assisted living, find a retirement community full of dedicated team members who make it their mission to ensure every resident receives the individualized attention they deserve. Keep reading to explore the benefits of Arizona’s most trusted choice in assisted living based on these three factors.

  1. Personalized Care. One of the things that set good senior living communities apart from other retirement homes in Nevada by prioritizing personalized care for seniors. At MorningStar, every senior is unique with distinctive needs, preferences, and goals. Personalized assisted living is designed to meet seniors’ individual needs and help them achieve their goals. Upon initial consultation, the best personalized senior living care plan is created and can forever change, expand, or shrink depending on changing needs over time.

  2. Dedicated Team Members. An assisted living facility’s care providers are a main factor in proper care and treatment. When considering senior living communities, seek retirement homes that employ caregivers who go above and beyond to ensure that each resident feels supported, cared for, and valued. Whether it's helping with daily tasks like bathing and dressing or providing emotional support and companionship, the team members at MorningStar are there to make a difference in the lives of their residents.

  3. Activities and Amenities. Many people think seniors in assisted living experience less than those living at home or with a family member. MorningStar offers a wide range of amenities and services designed to help seniors live life to the fullest. Seniors Benefit From Stretching Exercises

November 13, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

If you are a senior who is having difficulty turning your neck to look behind you when driving, having problems getting up from a low chair or difficulty picking something up from the floor, you may find adding stretches to your routine can really improve these types of motions. Stretching exercises also help seniors improve flexibility and balance, both of which lower a person’s risk of falls and injuries. Experts explain stretching gives seniors a better range of movement in their joints, helps improve posture, increases circulation and releases muscle tension and soreness.

The Journal of Gerontology reported on the results of a 12-month stretch and flex program for older adults. It found “participants demonstrated positive changes in areas like physical fitness, self-efficacy, perceived functioning, and well-being. They also experienced a decrease in pain.” Along with the favorable benefits stretching provides, it can be done anywhere and does not require any special equipment. However, before beginning any new exercise routine, be sure to consult with your healthcare provider regarding your fitness level and the type of stretches most appropriate for you.

Another thing to remember is it is important to warm up before stretching. Experts say it can be doing something as simple as a walk around the block. Additionally, they warn not to stretch to the point of pain, only to the point of tension. A stretch can typically be held for 30 seconds, but do not bounce when you stretch.

Facts About Living Wills

October 13, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Many times people put off creating a living will, also known as a health care power of attorney, because they don’t understand how important it is to have one; or they fear they are giving up too much control over their life. The medical community explains the reason you need one is to ensure you get the type of care you want when you can no longer speak for yourself.

The Harvard Medical School says before you create a living will there are a few things to consider including separating fact from fiction. To start with, think about what quality of life means to you. Sometimes having extraordinary measures taken to save your life doesn’t factor in where such treatments will leave you. Having a living will can help guide your medical team on just such decisions.

Some people worry if they choose to refuse certain life-sustaining medical treatments to prolong life even when death is inevitable that it will invalidate their life insurance policy. Medical professionals explain there is no reason to worry as the recorded cause of death will be from the person’s underlying medication condition. Another common concern is if medical treatment is started, it can’t be stopped. This too is not true as treatment plans can always be updated and revised to address current circumstances.

Medical professionals want patients to know treatment can be started or stopped. Even if you refuse certain life sustaining treatments, it does not mean you won’t get other types of treatment such as intensive comfort care to help manage pain and symptoms.

Seniors especially should be aware a recent new directive has pretty much replaced a DNR (do not resuscitate), which only gives EMS permission to not perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). A POLST (physician orders for life-sustaining treatment) can include a DNR as well as provide more instruction regarding medical interventions such as intubation, antibiotic use and feeding tubes. Talk to your medical provider to learn more.

At MorningStar of Fort Collins, we offer residents carefree retirement years with a range of hospitality and care services, luxury amenities and a complement of wellness programs and activities. In addition, our all-day dining service includes healthy, delicious meals prepared under the direction of our Executive Chef.

Located on the southeast side of the city and convenient to medical facilities and other services, MorningStar of Fort Collins offers 55 suites for assisted living in a variety of floor plans. Additionally, the Reflections Neighborhood has 24 suites devoted to specialized dementia care for residents with memory impairment.

Reducing the Risk of Falls

October 13, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living, Dementia Care

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), every year more than one in four people aged 65 or older suffer from a fall, and many of those accidents require a trip to the emergency department.  In addition to serious injuries, some falls even result in death.  To help mitigate the risk, experts recommend that along with safety modifications to the home that elderly adults also do balance exercises.

Balance exercises are relatively easy-to-do and can improve both your balance as well as increase lower body strength.  Ask your doctor for some suggestions or take a look at the Internet. Most do not require special equipment other than someone to assist you if needed.  The exercises can be done throughout the day and each one only takes a few minutes to do.

One example of a balance exercise is called Tightrope Walk.  This easy exercise improves balance, posture, and core strength.  Start in a standing position and lift your arms extending them out to your sides.  Now walk in a straight line keeping your gaze focused on a fixed point in the distance.  Each time you raise your foot, pause with it in the raised position for 2 to 3 seconds.  Alternating your feet, continue for 20 to 30 steps.

Another exercise is Rock the Boat, which starts by standing with your feet hip-distance apart and extending your arms out to your sides.  Lift your left foot off the floor and bend your knee to bring your heel toward your bottom holding it there for up to 30 seconds.  Now do the same with the other side.  Do each side 3 times.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we offer 48 suites devoted to the care of those with Alzheimer’s and other memory loss diseases.  Every aspect of our beautiful community is designed to meet the needs of our special residents, including the ability to explore their expansive surroundings freely and safely.  Each day is filled with activities that incorporate music, dance, art, exercise classes and the use of therapy animals. Tai Chi is a Popular Low-Impact Exercise

October 11, 2023 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

Harvard Health restates a classic text that says tai chi will help you become “Strong as an oak, flexible as a willow, and [mentally] clear as still water.” The ancient Chinese tradition is based in the martial arts; and is a popular low-impact exercise involving slow movements and breath. Experts say tai chi is suitable for people of all ages including seniors and offers numerous benefits.

Tai chi’s mind-body exercises consist of slow, flowing, and choreographed movements that provide many people a sense of calm, which is why it is often referred to as mediation in motion, or medication in motion. Its movements focus on control as well as slowing down and relaxing muscles to allow the body to move more freely. Harvard Health says for those in their 60s, 70, 80s and beyond, “tai chi’s restorative powers can help you age more gracefully and function at a higher level than those who don't practice.”

Other known benefits include offering relief from common ailments such back, neck and arthritis pain, and fibromyalgia as well as reducing the risk of heart disease. One study reports older adults who practiced tai chi one to three times a week had better balance and were 43% less likely to fall, and cut their risk of injury in half. In addition, research suggests tai chi improves mood and is an effective treatment for depression. It may also help reduce age-related cognitive decline and slow dementia.

For outstanding independent or assisted living, we encourage you to consider MorningStar of Billings, a true destination for successful aging. Our beautiful community is all-inclusive, boasting a dining service under the direction of our Executive Chef, wellness programs and activities, luxury amenities and care services.
