Dementia and Depression May be Confused with One Another

September 09, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Dementia Care

Experts report as people age, dementia and depression are both common conditions and may be confused with one another. Additionally, one may lead to the other as depression is linked to a higher risk for dementia, and dementia can cause depression.

The Harvard Medical School explains depression in the elderly can lead to a “phenomenon called pseudodementia—an apparent intellectual decline that stems from a lack of energy or effort.” They say individuals with this problem are often forgetful, move slowly, exhibit low motivation and signs of slowing mental prowess. If a loved one experiences these types of symptoms, their doctor may treat it with the same medications used to treat depression. As the person’s mood improves, they typically begin to function at their previous level.

Professionals share a few ways depression and dementia differs to help families and healthcare providers determine what is going on. One important difference is the time span of the decline.  A person with depression typically shows a faster decline in mental functioning than those suffering from Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. Also, Alzheimer’s disease causes confusion and disorientation as well as problems with short-term memory. Depression causes problems with concentration.

People suffering from depression do not have more than the usual difficulties with writing, speaking and motor skills, and are more aware of any memory problems they are experiencing. People suffering from Alzheimer’s disease seem indifferent to those types of changes. However, to determine the cause of the problem, it is important to make an appointment with the person’s healthcare provider.

If it does turn out to be Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia, MorningStar at Bear Creek is ready to help. Our community provides compassionate, comprehensive dementia care to those with memory impairment.  Along with 24-hour care, residents receive daily health monitoring, access to a full-time nurse, and participate in wellness programs and services tailored to their special needs.  For trusted memory care Colorado Springs families can count on, please contact us to learn more.

Companion Living Does More Than Save on Rent

August 26, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

For retired seniors, living on a fixed income poses difficult challenges as the cost of goods continues to rise in the U.S. The expense of maintaining a home, transportation, and household goods may seem almost unmanageable on one’s own. Many seniors that are looking to offset this cost of living may opt for roommates or to have a close friend move in. While there is certainly an economical advantage to splitting rent with a roommate, here are some benefits to companions living in retirement communities.

Companionship living within retirement communities certainly relaxes the financial burden on individuals and their families. Retirement homes in Glendale, Arizona, such as MorningStar at Arrowhead, have floorplans ranging from studios to two-bedroom suites that are perfect for roommate situations. MorningStar will also carefully pair you up with another senior who shares your interests and values if you do not have a prospective roommate in mind. Companionship living within retirement communities eases the transition of moving to senior living and helps one feel less alone while embarking on a new journey in life.

The presence of a roommate can encourage more confident socialization, boost energy, increase appetite, and improve sleep. Having another person in a shared home gives reassurance to family members as well. In the case of falling or needing urgent medical care, a roommate is available to help if the situation arises. Their presence also offers some security in the event your loved one has any problems bathing, preparing meals, or keeping up with routine chores. Having another person we can trust makes independent living easygoing by eliminating some of the hazards that come with living alone.

What Does Assisted Living Offer?

August 24, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

While assisted living has been around in the U.S. for the last several decades, some people are still confused as to what it means. Senior living communities that offer assisted living provide long-term housing for seniors to safely age in place. As it is not skilled nursing care, assisted living residents are overall active and independent, but may need support with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as bathing, dressing, and using the toilet. As a resident, you get 24/7 care and nutrition, daily meals as well as benefit from a range of wellness programs, the company of fellow residents and staff, and peace of mind knowing help is at hand if needed.

The American Health Care Association and the National Center for Assisted Living (AHCA NCAL) reports assisted living is a fast-growing sector of senior living with over 800,000 Americans currently residing in an assisted living community. Experts say in some cases, depending on the level of services provided, in-home care can actually be more expensive and doesn’t offer all the services and amenities found in many assisted living communities.

Homes like MorningStar of Fort Collins provide residents with much more than supportive care. Our Life Enrichment programs offer physical, intellectual, spiritual or social engagement with creative ways to stay active and productive as we believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless. We act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof.

MorningStar of Fort Collins is part of the MorningStar Senior Living Company, whose mission is to “cast a new light on senior living.” We start by creating a true home for our residents, made possible by a dedicated team who understands the highest expression of living is to share their talents, time and energy with others.

MorningStar of Fort Collins’ mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with beautiful surroundings and resort-style amenities, we provide outstanding assisted living and memory care.

August 22, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

At MorningStar of Fort Collins, we are committed to provide the best memory care and assisted living Fort Collins, CO offers, and our beautiful community was designed from the ground up to ensure our cherished residents’ safety and wellbeing.  One of the ways we do this is by providing each of our residents with around-the-clock care from our compassionate team of care managers.  This includes assistance with the Activities of Daily Living (ADLs) such as dressing, grooming, bathing, and eating as well as needed medical assistance.  Each of our care managers is hired for their loving nature and their desire to serve seniors.

Our medication care managers/QMAPs are another way we help to keep our residents safe.  In fact, a National Institutes of Health study found that 40% of seniors aged 65 and older take five or more prescription medications, and 90% take at least one prescription. The same study reports that as many as 55% of seniors take their medications incorrectly.  MorningStar’s med managers will oversee both the ordering and supervised administration of a resident’s medications.

Each MorningStar of Fort Collin’s 55 bright assisted living suites is equipped with a 24-hour emergency call system.  In addition, all have handicap-accessible bathrooms as well as wall-to-wall carpeting, high ceilings, large windows and lots of lighting.  Of course, our entire community is handicap accessible with wide doorways, spacious common areas and wide hallways.

The Reflections Neighborhood, our memory care area, offers 24 suites and is designed to encourage residents to explore their spacious surroundings easily and safely.  Warm, inviting common areas and clear wayfinding help residents feel at ease and encourage independence.  Memory care residents are also able to safely enjoy the outdoors with an enclosed patio and courtyard.

Engagement in Social Activities Helps to Delay Cognitive Decline in Seniors

August 22, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

A growing number of seniors have mild impairments in cognitive ability. The term mild cognitive impairment is used to describe this intermediate state between normal cognitive functioning and dementia. Individuals with mild cognitive function are at an increased risk of progressing to more severe cognitive impairment, as well as depressive episodes, and an overall poorer quality of life. Retirement homes in Glendale, AZ, such as MorningStar at Arrowhead, have specially designed a program for this often-overlooked group of seniors who struggle with mild impairment in cognitive ability, called WayFinders.

WayFinders is a peer group of seniors who, having jointly reached a unique stage in their journey, require special attention. An active and socially integrated life is a key component of well-being in old age. Older adults who are more socially engaged have better cognitive health outcomes and a slower rate of cognitive decline and dementia. Specifically designed for reengagement of seniors with mild cognitive loss, WayFinders uses purposeful activities and exercises to skillfully draw out and sensitively draw in seniors who are self-isolating in reaction to cognitive loss and the associated insecurities it creates.

With no effective pharmaceuticals available to prevent further cognitive decline in those with MCI, efforts are increasingly aimed at identifying non-pharmacological approaches. Many of our tools at MorningStar strengthen hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills while improving focus and concentration. The interactive offerings of our iN2L system (“It’s Never Too Late” software) are also used to great effect. Through diverse means we seek ways for these residents to restore confidence, maintain control, and find their footing on what can feel like uncharted territory.

Touring a Memory Care Community

August 19, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

The overall environment of a memory care community is important to your loved one’s well being and should be able to address their unique needs and personality. While in-person tours used to be the norm, during the pandemic communities went to virtual tours, and many still offer those along with regular onsite visits.

A Place for Mom offers several tips on what to look for when you tour an assisted living dementia care community. To start with, does the community address your loved one’s mobility issues? Relying on your senses, does the home appear clean without lingering bad odors? During a virtual or in-person tour, ask to see a room like the one your family member will occupy. Are you happy with the amount of windows, lighting and decor?

Your next concern should be about security and safety. Does the home have secure doors and rooms equipped with emergency alert systems, handicap-accessible bathrooms and color-coded hallways to make navigation easy? Is there adequate staffing during the day as well as nighttime, and what medical services are available?

Ask questions regarding the training staff receive particularly in regards to dementia care. If possible, can you and your loved one join the community for a meal? Not only does that give you the chance to taste the food but to interact with other residents. Does the home have a weekly activities’ calendar, and can you both attend one of the activities or classes? Lastly, A Place for Mom recommends trusting your instincts as you know your loved one the best.

MorningStar Memory Care at Bear Creek offers holistic care in Colorado Springs for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.   As a resident, your loved one will receive 24/7 care from compassionate, trained care managers, daily health monitoring, access to licensed nurses and other supportive third-party service providers. They will also engage in daily, meaningful activities. Please visit our website to learn more about our community and the philosophy that guides our care.

A Senior’s Unmet Needs Can Affect Quality of Life

August 19, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living Homes

Most seniors wish to maintain their independence as long as possible by living on their own; and this is why many who encounter problems in their day-to-day lives are reluctant to tell their families. The problem with this is as a senior starts to have more difficulty caring for themselves, their quality of life can be greatly diminished.

Even if mom or dad seem to be doing well on their own, experts say a rapid decline in their health from an accident or illness can catch families by surprise and make living on their own dangerous. In addition, many health conditions affect musculoskeletal, neurological, circulatory or sensory systems and impact a senior’s ability to perform the activities of daily living (ADLs). Experts say other factors indicating a need for more help include social isolation, medication side effects and the physical characteristics of the person’s home such as a second floor bedroom. If after implementing a series of home modifications is not adequate, more measures need to be taken to keep your loved one safe.

Experts explain unmet ADLs can lead to serious health problems including “malnutrition, poor personal hygiene, isolation, illnesses like urinary tract infections (UTIs) and falls. In fact, studies show ADL disabilities are associated with an increased risk for mortality; and taking care of daily needs can help prevent new and worsening health problems.” They also report if family members notice a decline in a loved one’s overall health, taking steps now can improve their safety and forestall further problems. One solution is to make a move to an assisted living community, where a person can live as safely and as independently as possible. To ensure needs are met, homes use the ADLs as a measure of a person’s functional performance.

At MorningStar of Billings, we offer all the comforts of assisted living homes with stylish apartments and beautifully appointed common areas both inside and out. Our broad range of services and amenities include wellness programs and activities, restaurant-style dining, billiards and game room, fitness room, library, and more to promote a healthy, engaged lifestyle. For independent or assisted living seniors can count on, we encourage you to consider MorningStar, the perfect community to comfortably and safely age in place.

MorningStar takes tremendous pride in the reputation we have earned for excellence and authenticity since our inception in 2003.  We believe the human capacity to grow, to learn and to contribute is ageless; and we act upon that truth daily, as we care for, inspire, and love the residents under our roof. It May Be Time to See Your Doctor about Your Memory Problems

August 19, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

Growing older can bring with it a variety of problems including worrying about your ability to remember things or the fact that it now takes you a lot longer to learn something new. While you may be concerned about forgetting where you put your glasses or the date of your next doctor visit, or even forgetting to pay an occasional bill, experts say most likely it is just normal aging.

So, what are the differences between normal forgetfulness and signs of a deeper problem? The National Institute on Aging (NIA) says it is about the degree of forgetfulness. While mild forgetfulness may be normal, memory loss that impacts your day-to-day life is a cause for concern and includes things like forgetting how to get home, or problems driving or using your phone.

The NIA says this is the time to have an honest discussion with your doctor as he/she can help determine whether it is normal aging or something else that is causing the problem. If indicated, they can do a series of cognitive and medical tests to narrow down the problem. It is important to remember not all memory loss is a sign of Alzheimer’s disease or another type of dementia but may be the result of a medication you are taking, depression, infection or a medical problem.

Doctors say it is important to get a diagnosis because if it is dementia there are medications and treatments that can help. A diagnosis of mild cognitive impairment (MCI) means a person is considered to have more memory or other thinking problems than other people their age. If a person does have MCI, typically they can still care for themselves and do their normal activities. While it can be an early indicator of Alzheimer’s disease, the NIA says not everyone with MCI will develop Alzheimer’s disease.

Along with assisted living, Fort Collins CO’s MorningStar community offers specialized care for those with Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our care addresses the needs of our residents starting with the very design of our Reflections Neighborhood to a wide range of wellness programs, activities and healthy, delicious meals.  Please visit our website to learn more about our compassionate, loving memory care.  While you are there, use our Virtual Assistant to inquire about pricing and set up a tour.

Meaningful and Fun Activities for Those Suffering from Dementia

August 17, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory Care Facility

To feel more connected to a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it helps to spend time together in meaningful or fun activities. The Alzheimer’s Association has put together a list of many such activities; and reminds families to consider the things the person used to like to do or was interested in. Also, consider their mood that day.

The outdoors can be a great place to spend quality time. Getting out in nature is calming and an easy walk or hike geared toward the person’s abilities can be fun for them and the grandkids. Watering plants, planting flowers and feeding the birds are other soothing activities. If the person seems fidgety, try having them rake leaves or sweep the patio. If they enjoy dogs, sit on a bench outside a dog park and watch them play; or find a quiet bench at the beach and people watch or enjoy the scenery.

Quiet activities inside might include sitting together looking through a family photo album or scrapbook. Listening to music the person enjoys while drinking a cup of herbal tea or hot chocolate is another good activity. Also, reading a favorite book aloud or watching a beloved movie together is a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Other suggestions for quality time together includes giving the person a neck rub, hand massage or pedicure. If they used to love to bake, make a batch of cookies or bread together; or have them help you fold laundry or set the table for dinner. These types of activities do not have to be done well but provide the person with a sense of purpose. The Alzheimer’s Association says if an activity doesn’t seem to be working, try something else.

For exceptional dementia care, Colorado Springs’ MorningStar at Bear Creek provides compassionate, individualized care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our community offers a setting specifically designed to enhance our residents’ freedom and fully accommodate the disposition and behavior of those with memory impairment. Dehydration is a Real Concern, Especially for the Elderly

August 15, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

Dehydration is a real concern especially for the elderly, or for anyone who spends time in the sun. The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention says over 43% of adults do not drink enough water each day. Although the amount of fluid we need differs, Heather Mangieri, a registered dietitian based in Imperial, PA, says on average men should consume 15 cups of fluid a day and women 11 cups.

Experts say water is the best way to hydrate but for those who find it a chore to drink, there are other healthy alternatives. In fact, statistics show 22% of our daily fluid intake is from foods such as fruits and vegetables, which are especially high in fluid. Some of the most moisture-providing vegetables are lettuce and cucumbers containing up to 96% water. Celery, radishes, spinach and cauliflower are other good choices. Some of the most hydrating fruits are tomatoes, strawberries, watermelon and cantaloupe.

Despite popular folklore, coffee doesn’t cause fluid loss and does provide hydration, but experts say it is still important to limit your amount of caffeine especially toward evening. Drinking too much alcohol does dehydrate the body and one tip to lessen the effects is to consume a beverage high in electrolytes like coconut water. Cold soups are another way to keep your fluid levels high. Oatmeal with berries is a good choice for breakfast as the oats soak up the water they are cooked in and the berries themselves are hydrating.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek in Colorado Springs, we specialize in providing memory care assisted living for seniors suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. Our home has 48 suites in a variety of floor plans; and we are equipped to care for residents from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. Residents receive daily health monitoring and Alzheimer's care as well as healthy meals and snacks throughout the day. Successful Aging in Today’s World

August 15, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

If we are lucky, we are all going to get a lot older, but experts say with a few common sense adjustments, we can live healthier, more productive lives than our grandparents or even parents. Moreover, it is worthwhile to plan for a long life as mortality rates have risen from just an average age of 47 for men and women in 1900 to older adults routinely reaching their eighties, nineties and upward.

In fact, recent studies report it is possible to grow older without a significant decline in health. Linda Fried, dean of the Columbia University Mailman School of Public Health and director of the Robert Butler Columbia Aging Center, says, “The idea that living longer necessarily means enduring significant declines in health has changed in the last two decades.” She adds, “It’s possible to increase your health span as long as your life span. Some decline in health and function is inevitable. But the image that older life is about decrepitude turns out not to be right.”

Spending decades working in the field of gerontology, Harry "Rick" Moody reminds older adults that even if they are living with health challenges, they should not lose sight of the opportunity for living a meaningful and positive life. He says at 76 his hearing is bad but he compensates by wearing a hearing aid. His advice is "If you compensate, you’ll age successfully. If you don’t, you won’t age successfully.”

Strategies for healthy aging include not limiting yourself by saying you are too old, to keep learning, keep exercising and to eat a healthy diet. Staying close to family and friends, getting enough sleep and using adaptive skills to compensate for things like short-term memory loss and a general slow-down of cognitive and physical abilities are also part of the process.

At MorningStar of Billings, our goal is to provide seniors the physical, intellectual, spiritual and social connections to lead productive and engaged lives. Along with independent living and assisted living, we also provide compassionate, holistic memory care to those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases. If you are looking for exceptional senior living, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.  Please see our website for more information.

Do Your Elderly Parents Need More Care?

July 29, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

Are you worried about your elderly parents getting the care they need at home? Senior living communities offering assisted living are one way to make sure they get the care they need, while giving family members the peace of mind they need.

To help ensure the community you choose is a good, all-around fit, experts say the trick is to find one based on your parents’ needs, their lifestyle and budget. A Place for Mom, one of the largest senior living referral websites, says the key to a successful move for mom or dad is to have a frank and open conversation with the family to make sure everyone is on the same page. Be sure your parents have the chance to give their opinion.

When you begin the actual search, remember assisted living is not a nursing home or memory care. To determine the best community for them, start by addressing their ADLs’ (activities of daily living) needs. Keep in mind the amount of help they need right now and how much help they will most likely need over the next couple of years. After all, you do not want to go through the process of moving them into a community to have to move them out in a few years once their needs cannot be met.

Determine your parents’ budget, and if you need help in that area, seek advice from an elder care financial service or attorney. At MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care of Fort Collins, we have partnered with Elderlife Financial Services to present different financial resources commonly used to pay for senior living.

Another important step is to visit the community (either virtually or personally) and to get to know the staff. Narrowing down your choices includes considering things such as how convenient will it be for the family to visit and is it located close to medical facilities, shopping and other services.  Furthermore, find out if the community is accepting new residents, and if not, you may want to go on their waiting list.

At MorningStar of Fort Collins, we offer a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community, second to none.  In addition to assisted living and memory care, we offer respite care and short-term stays (from one week up to a full month) that are ideal to see if we are a good fit. Please contact us or visit our website for more information about exceptional senior living at MorningStar.

MorningStar of Fort Collins’ mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living communities. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. How Seniors Can Stay Cool this Summer

July 27, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

The summer is a great time to relax, spend time with family and friends, and enjoy a little sun outside. As we get deeper into the summer, so too do we begin to experience higher temperatures during the day and drier air. While you may believe to be accustomed to hot summers, as we age it’s important to be mindful of activities you may be participating in outdoors and for how long. These easy reminders below can help you stay cool this summer and refrain from any heat-related dangers such as heat stroke.

Heatstroke is the most fatal to individuals that are 50 years of age and older, according to The National Institute of Aging. Certain health problems, such as heart problems, high blood pressure, and kidney disease can increase one’s chances of experiencing heat stroke. Even the prescription drugs you take may put you at risk of heatstroke if you are in high temperatures for long periods of time.

In order to have a safe and comfortable summer, it is important to drink a lot of fluids such as water and juices to stay hydrated. Try to minimize your intake of alcohol and caffeine while being in the heat as this can dehydrate you. It is also a good idea to wear loose-fitting clothing during the summer so that body heat can escape. A major rule in the summer is to remember to keep your home cool by using AC if possible and keeping blinds closed during the hottest times of the day. Having fans to circulate air may also be helpful.

MorningStar retirement communities in Glendale, Arizona are not unfamiliar with the heat that is associated with this climate. In order to keep our community safe, MorningStar retirement communities in Glendale AZ pride themselves on having modern floorplans ranging from spacious studios to comfortable two-bedroom suites. When outdoors, MorningStar at Arrowhead keeps our senior living safe during the summer by encouraging proper intake of fluids, healthy foods, and breaks from the outdoors through our staff and 24/7 nurse access.

Sunscreen Provides Critical Protection for Seniors this Summer

July 25, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Retirement Communities

Extended and continual unprotected exposure to the sun can lead to a multitude of health concerns and discomfort. Such as sunburn, skin aging, and potential damage to the eyes. Overexposure to UV rays, or ultraviolet rays, from the sun is one of the top causes of skin cancer. While dangers from UV rays affect every age group, millions of seniors in America will be treated for skin cancer this year. By using sunscreen, you can take your skin health seriously and aid in your body’s necessary protection this summer.

Skin health is critical around the year, but it is especially crucial during the summer when there may be little cloud cover and high temperatures. Sunscreen is one of the most valuable ways to keep your skin out of harm from UV rays. However, sunscreen is often underutilized, especially among seniors and those in senior living homes. According to the CDC, over half the cases of skin cancer are found in people 65 years or older. To combat this issue, it is important to wear a sunscreen of a sun protection factor, SPF, of at least 30. This level of protection aids against the development of skin cancer caused by the sun and UV rays.

Applying sunscreen daily, even if you do not plan on being outside, is the best way to protect your skin. Many seniors living in retirement communities think they are staying safe by staying indoors, but actually, sitting next to large windows or riding in a car can pose a risk to skin health. Ultraviolet rays can cause skin damage in as little as 15 minutes, even through glass. Being liberal with sunscreen everyday is the best way to protect you and your skin.

At MorningStar at Arrowhead, it is our goal to keep you safe while staying in our retirement communities, especially during the summer. For this reason, using sunscreen daily is encouraged at MorningStar to ensure your protection from the sun while exploring the amenities around our retirement homes. Gardening, daily walks, and other outdoor activities are a great way to celebrate the summer but should be done in limited amounts while taking protective measures such as wearing sunscreen, loose clothing that covers the body, and taking breaks under the shade.

MorningStar of Fort Collins Offers Specialized Memory Care

July 25, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Memory care

Caring for a loved one suffering from Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia can be a very stressful job.  If you think it is time to consider other care options, rather than feeling disappointed in yourself, remember the job of a caregiver is tough and it may be in yours as well as your spouse, mom, or dad’s best interest to move them into memory care.

If caring for a loved one requires more effort on your part than you are able to give physically or mentally, please reach out and get the help you need as your own health and wellbeing may be aversively impacted. Also, experts stress that while there is no downside to placing someone in memory care in the earlier stages of the disease there could be drawbacks to waiting too long.  Remember the more advanced stages bring with it a significant decline in everyday functioning.

Along with assisted living, MorningStar of Fort Collins offers 24 suites for the care of residents with memory impairment from the onset of the disease to the most advanced stages. Our Reflections Neighborhood is staffed by a team of individuals who through purposeful training and experience are dementia care specialists.  Our team understands the unique needs of each resident and delivers that care with compassion and thoughtfulness.  Additionally, every aspect of our home has been designed to accommodate those needs.

Keep in mind as the disease progresses; it becomes very difficult for a family to keep up with the increasing needs as the person requires more and more assistance with daily care activities such as bathing, toileting, and eating.  Other signs of advanced dementia include reduced mobility, wandering, and falling, which may require home modifications.  Professional memory care homes such as ours are equipped to deal with these issues and have 24/7 caregivers available.

So rather than feel like you let your loved one down by not caring for them yourself, placing them in a multi-faceted community designed to attend to their changing needs may be the most loving thing you can do.  Please visit our website for more information about the finest memory care and assisted living Fort Collins has to offer.

MorningStar Senior Living’s communities across the U.S. have a passionate commitment to serving seniors, earning a reputation for satisfaction that is second to none. If you are looking for the finest memory care or assisted living Fort Collins offers, we encourage you to consider MorningStar.

After a Diagnosis of Alzheimer’s Disease

July 13, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Alzheimer assisted living

Receiving a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is devastating for the person as well as their spouse, children and other family and friends. While you may be left wondering what to do next, experts say start with getting prepared.

Unfortunately, we do not have a cure for AD, a progressive neurodegenerative disorder, and planning for the future is critical. Experts recommend “Any dementia patient who is still mentally competent should focus on making medical, legal and financial preparations with their loved ones as soon as possible.”  In addition to long-term planning, it is also important to prioritize healthy Alzheimer Assisted living and address any issues.

Dementia care specialists say getting good medical care is important and will probably include your doctor prescribing Alzheimer’s medications to help minimize symptoms for a period of time. Memory loss, confusion and other types of behaviors make it difficult for a person to manage the ADLs (activities of daily living), and over time, they will need more daily supervision and care. When it becomes more than a family can manage at home, other solutions such as a memory care community need to be considered.

In the early stages of the disease, memory and focus can come and go, and it is important to evaluate the person’s fitness for doing things like driving, cooking unsupervised, and in some cases, going out alone. As the disease progresses, these activities are most likely not a good idea.

While still able to make decisions, encourage the person to prepare legal documents such as a durable power of attorney (POA) for health care and a durable power of attorney for finances. Consulting an elder law attorney is helpful. Other suggestions include staying physically and mentally active and eating a healthy diet.

Morningstar at Bear Creek is devoted to caring for those suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Every aspect of our care is tailored to serve the needs of our tender residents from a team of exceptional caregivers to meals, wellness programs and services.   For memory care Colorado Springs families can count on, we encourage you to contact us or visit our website for more information.
