Show the Special Moms in Your Life Appreciation by Giving Your Time

April 19, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in retirement homes

This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 8th.  Rather than sending a bouquet of flowers this year, show grandma, mom and other moms in your life your appreciation and love by giving your time.

Commit to helping mom with a DIY house project like painting a room or helping clean up the attic or basement. Give mom and grandma the “day off” by taking over the cooking and cleaning up. For a simple dessert, set up a sundae bar with all the trimmings and let everyone make their own treat.

If mom lives in an apartment, decorate her front door with a wreath or a huge homemade card signed by the whole family telling her how special she is. For a movie-loving mom, make a date to watch one of her favorite romantic comedies together in person or virtually. Other fun ideas include hosting a garden tea party or barbeque, and if you can’t get together, send mom all the goodies you want her to enjoy at a virtual party.

Spend time together baking a fancy dessert or cooking a family favorite recipe for dinner. If mom lives close by, put together a basket of homemade goodies and deliver them to her door. The grandkids can help grandma feel loved by making cards or putting on a talent show or play. You or an older grandchild can “interview” grandma about her childhood and early adult years, wedding day, her years as a parent of small children, jobs etc. Whatever you decide on, just make sure mom feels special.

Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 8th

April 13, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

If your mom is one of those people who has everything and/or is living in an apartment where she does not have room for a bunch of useless stuff, be creative with this year’s Mother’s Day gift. You may worry that more practical gifts are too boring but if they help to make her life easier and more interesting, most mothers are happy to get them.

If mom lives alone, there are several smartly-designed dressing aids to make it easier for her and would be a useful addition to a basket of goodies. If mom likes to wear dresses or blouses that zip up the back, a zipper puller will come in handy. The same goes for a bracelet fastener or magnetic necklace fastener, both are great for those with some mobility problems. A cozy gift idea for a mom or grandmother who always has cold feet is a pair of heatable slippers. Microwaveable ones have a heatable insole typically filled with aromatic ingredients such as lavender and rosemary.

For a mom who suffers from sore muscles and stiffness, how about a Shiatsu pillow massager designed for the back and neck (it can also be used in other places). Simple to use, just plug it in and feel the tension ease from your body with the 3-dimensional deep-kneading shiatsu massage nodes. Want to give mom a spa-like experience? A gift of shower steamer bombs create a relaxing, aromatherapy experience for women who like showers more than a bath. Most are made with natural ingredients and pure essential oils like lemongrass and lavender.

Moms and grandmothers always love the gift of a loved one’s time. Why not put on a fancy brunch with many of mom’s favorite dishes. An offer to declutter and organize her home or help her write her life story is bound to bring up lots of memories and fun stories to share.

Reduce the Risk of Falls with Balance Exercises

March 28, 2022 by Suzanne Chapple in Assisted Living

According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), every year more than a third of people over the age of 65 suffer from a fall, and many of those accidents require a trip to the emergency department.  In addition to serious injuries, some falls even result in death.  To help mitigate the risk, experts recommend that along with safety modifications to the home that elderly adults also do balance exercises.

Balance exercises are relatively easy-to-do and can improve both your balance as well as increase lower body strength.  Ask your doctor for some suggestions or take a look at the Internet. Most do not require special equipment other than someone to assist you if needed.  The exercises can be done throughout the day and each one only takes a few minutes to do.

One example of a balance exercise is called Tightrope Walk.  This easy exercise improves balance, posture, and core strength.  Start in a standing position and lift your arms extending them out to your sides.  Now walk in a straight line keeping your gaze focused on a fixed point in the distance.  Each time you raise your foot, pause with it in the raised position for 2 to 3 seconds.  Alternating your feet, continue for 20 to 30 steps.

Another exercise is Rock the Boat, which starts by standing with your feet hip-distance apart and extending your arms out to your sides.  Lift your left foot off the floor and bend your knee to bring your heel toward your bottom holding it there for up to 30 seconds.  Now do the same with the other side.  Do each side 3 times.

At the MorningStar senior living communities we understand the importance of our residents living life to the fullest.  This is why MorningStar of Fort Collins offers a Life Enrichment program that focuses on creative ways to stay physically, intellectually, socially and spiritually active.  Please see our website for more information.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Before beginning any exercises, please consult with your health care provider.

We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Things You Can Do to Enhance Memory Function

November 16, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple in Senior Living

In an article in the US News & World Report, experts say forgetfulness is not an inevitable part of growing older and there are things we can do to help maintain and enhance our memory function and overall brain health.  Furthermore, they also benefit whole body health.

One of the first things they recommend is to never stop making “physical activity a priority as it optimizes blood flow to the entire body, including the brain.  An adequate supply of blood and oxygen to the brain helps to keep our memories sharp.”  Researchers explain that the type of exercise is also important and recommend a minimum of 30 minutes a day of cardio exercise such as running, power walking, biking, or swimming.  However, before beginning any new exercise regime, be sure to check with your healthcare provider.

In addition, continuing to learn new things can improve our memory as studies have found a correlation between challenging our brain and maintaining brain health.  This could include activities such as playing an instrument, starting a new hobby, learning a language, or just broadening your reading habits.

Other advice that not only enhances cognitive thinking but overall health includes getting enough sleep each night.  Research has shown that “powering down on a nightly basis allows the brain to heal and restore itself, clearing toxins that can lead to Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia types.”

What sets MorningStar at Arrowhead apart from other retirement communities in Glendale, AZ?  We strive to provide a true “home” for our residents and have a team committed to serving seniors who treat them with the dignity and respect they deserve.  Our loving, around-the-clock care encompasses the physical, mental, spiritual and social wellbeing of our residents. Think Growing Older is All Doom & Gloom?

July 24, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

Many people believe growing older is awful and that everyone in their eighties is sickly and depressed. However in 86-year-old psychologist Katharine Esty’s recently published fourth book called, EightySomethings: A Practical Guide to Letting Go, Aging Well, and Finding Unexpected Happiness, she strongly dispels this notion. In fact her research found elderly adults are happier and hold a more positive outlook than most of us thought. Esty explains, “The stereotypes that people have in their minds about old age are just completely wrong.” She adds, the type of activities people in their eighties are doing is stunning and many are pain-free, living full productive lives.

It turns out a lot of octogenarians are still working full- or part-time jobs, or finding fulfillment in doing some sort of volunteer work through their communities or church. Esty says having a purpose in life, regardless of age, gives a person’s life meaning. In addition most 80-year-olds have already experienced loss and hardships in their life and have developed coping mechanisms to better deal with difficulties. The majority of octogenarians also reported feeling less anger, worry and stress than they did when they were younger; and while they may have some regrets, most had come to terms with their decisions. Lastly, the contentment 80-year-olds express about their lives is they recognize time is short and should not be wasted.

At MorningStar of Billings, we represent the finest in senior living with independent living, assisted living and memory care. Our unique mission statement is built on honoring God, valuing seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve, and helps us provide a true home for residents. Eating Habits across the Globe can Teach Us Something

July 21, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

Nutritionists and dietitians say our diet as well as the environment would be improved if we adopting some of the healthy eating habits of other cultures around the world. The U.S. News & World Report notes “food production is responsible for 83% of U.S. household greenhouse gas emissions, much of that from the production of red meat.” They explain traditional, plant-based diets are cultural models of healthy eating. In fact the 2019 EAT Lancet Report recommended people eat 50 percent less red meat and sugar for their health and that of our planet.

Many of the characteristics of traditional diets rely heavily on plant foods, and mealtimes are a social gathering of family and/or friends. Most share a cultural relevance but in reality Chinese cuisine is not that different from Greece, Mexico or Ghana. All are based on fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, tubers, nuts and seeds, healthy plant oils and an array of herbs and spices. Unlike the American diet, fish, seafood and animal meats make up a smaller portion of the diet.

Sara Baer-Sinnott, president of Oldways, a nonprofit food and nutrition organization committed to improving public health through cultural food traditions and lifestyles, says porridge, rice and beans, and flatbreads are three examples of universal dishes. They are easy to prepare with vegetables, eggs, fruits and spices and can be sweet or savory. Porridges have many names including Hawaiian poi, made from the stem of the taro plant; Indian or Sri-Lanka’s upma, made from semolina or rice flour; and Russian and Eastern European’s kasha, a boiled buckwheat.

Flatbread is the world’s oldest bread and was made almost simultaneously wherever grain was grown. Examples include rice paper wraps, chapattis, tortillas, and pitas. The additional of protein to porridge, rice and flatbreads turns them into a main dish.

At one of Billings’ top senior living facilities, MorningStar of Billings not only offers independent living, assisted living and memory care but serves beautifully prepared meals that not only taste good but are nutritious. Why Does Our Hair Turn Gray?

April 26, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

While some people seem to not turn gray until an advanced age, most of us see our first gray hair sometime in our thirties. Experts say in time, everyone’s hair will turn gray, and with each decade after age 30, your chance of going gray increases by 10 to 20 percent. For those blessed with a very long lifespan, their hair will most-likely go completely white.

The process is gradual as each strand of hair a follicle produces remains the same color it starts out as. For instance a strand of blond hair stays blonde regardless of how long it grows (we typically keep a strand for up to 3 ½ years). Gray hair and eventually white hair is caused as our follicles produce less and less color as we age.

However, not all gray hair is a result of “age-related graying.” In some cases, experts say stress may play a role in how quickly someone grays. They point out that most likely it is not the stress itself that makes hair go gray but rather it triggers “a common condition called telogen effluvium, which causes hair to shed about three times faster than normal.” So if you are the right age, many of the new hairs that grow in may be gray.

When very young people start to turn gray, it can be a cause for concern. Premature hair graying (PHG) can be from a vitamin B12deficiency, thyroid disease, or smoking as well as vitiligo, which causes melanocytes (cells at the base of hair follicles that produce the hair’s color) to be lost or destroyed. Still researchers say turning gray is mostly influenced by the genes we inherit from our parents and we can get a better idea of when we will turn gray by looking at past generations.

Fall Prevention for Seniors

April 26, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

The Mayo Clinic reminds older adults it is important they take proper precautions to prevent falls. As we age, medical conditions, the resulting medications needed, and a more sedentary lifestyle can result in weaker muscles and balance problems that can lead to a fall. Also please keep in mind, a fall for an older adult can cause injuries that are very serious such as a broken hip, head trauma, or in the most severe cases, death.

However, the solution to preventing falls is not to stop moving. The medical experts at the Mayo Clinic explain being inactive is bad for our health regardless of how old we are and it is vital that we keep moving. To that end, they suggest a commonsense six-part plan to keep seniors safely mobile.

Their first recommendation is to set up an appointment with your doctor. Bring to the visit a list of all your medications, and be prepared to discuss with your doctor any side effects of the drugs that may put you more at risk for a fall such as anti-depressants or sedatives. It may be possible to eliminate or substitute the medication for something else. Also talk to your doctor about whether you have fallen and if it was due to your medical condition.

In addition, discuss with your healthcare provider what type of exercise would be best for you. Typically walking, swimming and something like tai chi are gentle exercises that are safe for most; and offer the benefit of strengthening muscles, improving balance, and gait.

Other ways to lessen your risk for a fall begins by reviewing your home with an eye to fall prevention. Start by checking hallways and stairways for adequate lighting, and add more if needed. Secure loose rugs and make sure you have wide clear paths for walking around your home. Wear proper fitting shoes with nonskid soles and use assistive aids like a cane or walker if needed to help maintain your balance. Install grab bars and railings where needed.

At the MorningStar at Bear Creek memory care assisted living community, our beautiful home is devoted to residents with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. Our extensive experience and training have given us a deep understanding of the disease, and we are proud to be designated as one of the Alzheimer’s Association’s “Recognized Leaders in Dementia Care.” Please visit our website to learn more.

A Simple Habit that May Help “Reverse Aging”

April 18, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

It turns out some unexpected habits and lifestyle choices can affect the way we age. Andrew Steele, scientist and author of the new book, “Ageless: The New Science of Getting Older Without Getting Old,” says the younger the better it is when it comes to preparing for our senior years. He points to the vast amount of research being done in aging biology, which shows that in theory, we can slow the aging process.

One way is to take care of our teeth as studies indicate a correlation between good oral health and heart disease, perhaps even dementia. Steele explains poor oral hygiene creates bacteria in the mouth leading to gum and tooth decay as well as inflammation. “Chronic low-level inflammation causes your immune system to become less effective at dealing with actual threats, such as age-related disease.”

A recent study out of Scotland reports people who brushed their teeth twice a day had a lower risk for heart attacks. The current recommendations from the American Dental Association are to brush your teeth at least two times a day for two minutes and to use toothpaste with fluoride and floss daily.

Another step Steele says we can take to reverse aging and essential to overall good health is to get enough sleep. He explains that while we sleep; the brain flushes out toxins of which some are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. Research shows too little sleep is linked to an increased risk of death but too much sleep (11 hours or more) is linked to an even higher risk. Experts say seven to eight hours is optimal for most adults.

Please visit MorningStar of Billings’ website for more information regarding one of the area’s finest senior living facilities offering independent living, assisted living and memory care. For pricing and availability or to set up a tour, please contact us.

Falls that Result in Serious Injury are Common in Those Over Sixty-Five

February 16, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that each year, one out of every five Americans aged 65 years and older has a fall that results in broken bones or a head injury. However, medical professionals say while it is important for seniors to take precautions to prevent falls as injuries can be serious, they also remind us that regardless of how old we are, it is beneficial for our overall health to keep moving. Experts explain that failing to engage in “mild exercise on a regular basis results in reduced muscle strength, decreased bone mass, loss of balance and coordination, and reduced flexibility.”

They go on to say that despite commonly held beliefs, falls are not a normal part of aging and there are things you can do to help keep you on your feet and mitigate the risk of a fall. Their first advice is to talk to your doctor about your risk and prevention. Tell them if you have fallen and discuss your medications to see if side effects include dizziness or sleepiness that could contribute to falls.

While falls are common in seniors 65 years of age and older, individuals with dementia are at an even greater risk. Researchers say there are several reasons for this including gait and balance issues as well as problems concentrating and with staying focused on the task at hand. Other issues that may increase the risk of falls include poor eyesight and chronic diseases such as Parkinson’s, and arthritis or numbness in the feet. If you often feel dizzy or lightheaded upon standing or suddenly sitting up, ask your doctor if you might have postural hypotension, and find out how you can alleviate the symptoms.

Further tips to reduce your risk include having your eyes checked annually and updating your glasses when needed. In addition, talk to your doctor about the best footwear for inside the house as well as outside. Check your home for trip hazards (the CDC has a list of tips) and install grab bars in the bathroom. Finally, ask your doctor about exercises to strengthen your leg muscles as well as balance-training exercises to improve balance.

Each Year Millions of Elderly Seniors Fall Prey to Fraudulent Schemes

January 22, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

Each year millions of elderly seniors fall prey to ruthless schemes that rob them of their money and identity. The sad part it is often a result of a senior’s trusting nature or feelings of isolation and loneliness; or in some cases, a senior may have cognitive issues that impair their judgement and decision-making skills.

Experts explain there are several reasons why seniors are more susceptible to fraudulent schemes starting with the fact they tend to be very trusting. Our elderly population was typically raised be polite and agreeable to others, which in turn can make them more susceptible to fraud. Lonely seniors can easily be preyed upon as they are willing to stay on the phone and engage in conversation with a stranger.

The National Council on Aging (NCOA) updates the public to current scams targeting seniors so if you have a parent or other elderly loved ones who may be at risk, take a look at the info and discuss the various schemes used with them. One scam frequently used recently is a phone call, email or in-person approach to collect money for disaster relief. Thieves also scam those who have been the victim of a disaster by trying to collect personal information under the guise of providing some sort of financial relief.

The NCOA says there are ways to avoid getting scammed such as never giving out your personal information to anyone but a trusted family member, friend or your professional financial advisor. In addition, never make big financial decisions without consulting with one of those trusted people. Also do not give out personal PIN #s, or Medicare and other financial info over the phone unless you initiated the call or know the person.

Other commonsense advice includes being wary of high-pressure sales persons, never signing a contract until you understand it entirely, and to be suspicious of unexpected announcements of winning money, trips, or other prizes. Experts say it is most likely a hoax. Always take your time when making financial decisions and do not give blanket approval to a vendor for medical equipment and other purchases.

Helping Your Body to Recover from Surgery

January 21, 2021 by Suzanne Chapple

Medical experts say there are things we can do before and after that may help encourage our recovery from surgery. One of the first things says Dr. Charla Fischer, an orthopedic surgeon at NYU Langone Spine Center in New York City, is to think of surgery not as a sprint but rather as a full marathon or race. She explains, "The surgery itself is just the first part of the race – there is also the recovery after. You want your body to be as prepared as possible, and exercise and good nutrition before and after surgery are part of this."

Before your surgery, your doctor may have you screened for a series of health problems including malnutrition, anemia, diabetes and pain, and then take steps to address them. As exercise is another important part of getting in shape, you should talk to your surgeon about what is safe for you to do. If you feel you need more guidance, ask if you are a candidate for a pre-habilitation program as it can show you the best type of exercise to safely strengthen your body in readiness for surgery. Also, be sure to ask about what kind of exercise is safe to do after the surgery. Doctors say typically the quicker you are to move, the quicker you get your strength back.

If you find yourself suffering from preoperative anxiety, ask your surgeon to walk you through the experience so you know what to expect including “pre-surgery, during surgery, the hospital stay and recovery after surgery," Dr. Fisher explains. Your post-surgery diet should be rich in protein, and avoid sugary and processed foods. Also stay hydrated. Quitting smoking is another thing that offers big benefits in post-surgical outcomes as “smoking increases the risk of blood clots, reduces the ability of blood to carry oxygen to the tissues that need it and increases stress on the heart.” Finally, if something doesn’t seem right about your recovery, contact your surgeon.

At MorningStar at Jordan, we provide high-quality assisted living and memory care as well as respite care. Respite or temporary care is a great option for seniors who are recovering from surgery or an illness and require some day-to-day support services. The Elderly are at Greater Risk of Hypothermia

December 30, 2020 by Suzanne Chapple

Just as the elderly can suffer in the heat of summer, they can also be adversely affected by the cold. This is due to the fact that as we age, we lose the ability to regulate our body temperature. The CDC reports that both extremes can stress the heart, but that the cold is more dangerous to the elderly as more of them die each year from the cold than the heat.

One of the reasons doctors say is it is harder for a person to realize they are cold is it often happens gradually. While someone younger may not be affected, an elderly person sitting in a too cold room for hours can lead to hypothermia, a condition where the body temperature gets dangerously low. The National Institute on Aging (NIA) warns that for older adults “a body temperature of 95°F or lower can cause many health problems, such as a heart attack, kidney problems, liver damage, or worse.”

In addition, medical experts report that certain medical conditions and medications can cause seniors to have a drop in body temperature. These include beta blockers, sedatives, antipsychotics and antidepressants meds as well as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid). Alcohol and drug use, nerve damage, and malnutrition and anorexia also cause seniors to be more sensitive to the cold.

To help mom or dad stay safe in winter, experts say keep the space a senior spends their time in at least 68 to 70 degrees. Another tip is to make sure the person is dressed warm enough. Keep their feet warm in non-slip house shoes or shoes and socks. If they live alone, have someone check on them regularly during cold weather.

A Few Interesting Facts about the 1918 Flu Pandemic

October 18, 2020 by Suzanne Chapple

While most of us have heard about the 1918 flu pandemic, sometimes called the Spanish Flu, that caused approximately 40 million deaths worldwide according to the World Health Organization (WHO), we may not know much more about it. Scientists explain this strain of flu was an H1N1 virus with a similar genetic structure of viruses derived from avian origins. Experts also say the methods for preventing the spread of the flu was much the same as preventing COVID-19 from spreading – handwashing, mask wearing, and avoiding close contact with others.

In October 6, 1918, a Greek newspaper published an announcement from the government that read: “The disease germs enter the body through the mouth and generally from the respiratory system. […] The disease spreads by coughs and [is] transmitted by air. Therefore, it is recommended the avoidance of [mental] stress and overwork. […] All schools must be close[d], and meticulous maintenance of cleanliness of lingerie and hands is proposed. In particular, it is highly recommended to avoid close contact with every person who displays flu symptoms.”

Moreover as with today’s pandemic, the virus has its various misconceptions and myths that spread throughout the general public. One such conspiracy theory widely circulated in the US and the United Kingdom was that the pandemic was caused by aspirin, which was produced by the German Bayer Company. Medical professionals believed the story was probably propagated by the fact that the flu emerged right at the end of World War I, which involved the US and England fighting against the Germans.

Another myth written up in a Brazilian paper involved German submarines spreading the virus. A similar story spread to the US’s East Coast where many believed German boats had come ashore and released the infection into the air. Experts say that like today, myths and misinformation spreads when scientists and doctors do not have solutions and people are anxious for answers.

Your Wellness Visit Should Include Being Screened for Cognitive Decline

October 16, 2020 by Suzanne Chapple

Medical experts have found that many older adults are not being screened for cognitive decline during routine physical exams, and say it would be a good idea to do so. While many of us would be shocked to hear devastating news that we have early-stage Alzheimer’s disease, doctors say it is important to identify memory loss issues early as available treatments are more effective early-on. Moreover, if it is determined you do have some memory loss, there are steps you can take to help slow down or mitigate the risk.

Additionally, if you are wondering if a cognitive test is expensive, Medicare does pay for an annual “wellness visit,” which is supposed to include a quick cognitive assessment to help identify some early warning signs of dementia. From there your doctor can recommend a more thorough examination. However, according to a recent Alzheimer’s Association survey, over half of the respondents said their healthcare provider has never asked about their cognitive health, let alone administered a test. Less than a third said they had discussed memory and cognitive issues with a doctor. Joanne Pike, an Alzheimer’s Association chief program officer, says while, “Many older adults say they’ve noticed changes in their mental abilities, “the majority of the time seniors are waiting for the physician to bring it up.”

So what does a cognitive assessment include? To start with your doctor will ask you directly if you have noticed any changes in your memory recently. If you have a family member with you, the doctor may ask them if they noticed any problems. You may be asked to take a short test, but often the assessment includes the doctor asking questions regarding your activities, your interests and how well you are functioning at home. In fact, you may not even realize you are being cognitively assessed.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we have 48 secure suites offering specialized assisted living for dementia patients. Does Your Elderly Parent Love Cats or Dogs?

October 05, 2020 by Suzanne Chapple

Have you been searching for something for your elderly mom or dad that would provide some comfort and help ease their feelings of loneliness and isolation? While you may think now is not the best time for them to assume the responsibilities of a new pet, you may want to take a look at one of the many “robotic pets” in the marketplace.

We know there has been a lot of research that supports the idea pet ownership is beneficial to seniors and a loving pet is a great companion. Now researchers have also discovered that robotic pets may provide the elderly with many of the same benefits live animals do. A 2017 study found that the interaction between older adults and animals, whether real or robotic, helped lower blood pressure, eased anxiety, reduced feelings of loneliness and improved the overall quality of life.

The advantage of a low-maintenance robot dog or cat is they are easy for seniors with little to no tech savvy to “care for.” The realistic pets do little tricks such as a robotic dog who wags its tail, raises its eyebrow when you pet it, has a heartbeat, and makes a barking noise. For people with dementia, robotic pets have helped ease agitation and anxiety and seem to have a calming influence.

In fact, New York’s Department for the Aging (DFTA) was so impressed with the pets that they implemented a program to distribute mechanical dogs and cats to a number of seniors with the aim of easing loneliness. The DFTA’s Commissioner, Lorraine Cortés-Vázquez explains, “For the older person, social isolation really has a devastating effect on their health.”

If you are looking for exceptional senior living, Glendale AZ’s MorningStar community may be your answer. Along with 60 assisted living suites, MorningStar at Arrowhead offers 25 secure suites dedicated to the specialized care of residents with Alzheimer’s disease or other forms of dementia. Lifestyle Habits of People Who Live the Longest

August 25, 2020 by Suzanne Chapple

Over the last couple of decades, researchers have become interested in why people in certain areas across the globe have a longer lifespan.  While America’s current average age expectancy is 78 years old, it is much higher in many other places in the world.  Areas such as Okinawa, Japan; Sardinia, Italy; Nicoya, Costa Rica; and Icaria, Greece count many more centenarians among their population.  These regions are known as “Blue Zones,” and the individuals living well into their 90s and more are typically healthy in both mind and body.

National Geographic writer, Dan Buettner, spend years studying each culture, and wrote a book about his findings called, The Blue Zones: Lessons for Living Longer From the People Who’ve Lived the Longest.  In his book, he cites 9 lifestyle habits that all of the groups had in common.

One of the habits he mentions is that the very elderly in these areas continue to move naturally as part of their everyday life and some still work in the fields.  Conversely in our country, many people lead sedentary lifestyles and find it difficult to get enough exercise.  John Day, MD, author of The Longevity Plan, suggests ways to remedy the problem.  He writes, “For example you could take a vow to never use an elevator or escalator again unless the stairs are restricted. Other options include an evening walk or doing everything possible to avoid having to use a car. Even vacations can be scheduled in a way that is physically active, like a vacation centered around skiing, hiking, or cycling.”

Another common trait shared by many of the elderly in the Blue Zones is that they still had a purpose in life.  Many studies support that by reporting the connection between our minds, our health, and our sense of purpose is very powerful and leads to better health outcomes.  Simply said you need to have a reason to get out of bed each morning.

It is also recommended that we eat until we are only 80 percent full and stick to a “plant-forward diet.”  Along with eating lots of vegetables and whole grains, cut back or eliminate sugar-filled or processed foods from your diet.  Other suggestions for longevity include maintaining strong family ties, having a sense of community and a good social life.

If you are looking for exceptional assisted living, Glendale, AZ’s MorningStar at Arrowhead Creek may be the place for you.  Our residents receive nutritional, tasty meals and have access to wellness programs and activities along with a wide range of care services.  Please visit our website to learn why our residents are happy to call MorningStar “home.”

Quit Procrastinating, It’s Easier than You Think to Create an Estate Plan

August 11, 2020 by Suzanne Chapple

Most of us hate to think of our own demise and thus procrastinate about creating an estate plan, but remember having your finances in order not only protects your surviving spouse and family but avoids leaving them a big mess to sort out.  It also can provide funds to care for or follow your directive if you are incapacitated and no longer able to advocate for yourself.  Even if you have a Will, you may want to review it to make sure it is up-to-date.

Common estate planning documents include: Last Will and Testament; Advance Medical Directive; Living Will; and a Financial Power of Attorney.  Preparing a Will allows you to determine what happens to any minor children, your assets, and sentimental items, and typically includes naming someone as your Executor who sees to it your directives are carried out.  The AARP says if you are married, your spouse also needs their own Will.  If you have substantial property or wealth, you may want to create a living trust as it allows you to distribute assets now or after your death.

Having an Advance Medical Directive allows you to make decision regarding your health if you are unable to do so in the future due to a disease such as Alzheimer’s or other debilitating health issues.  It often includes the extent of life-saving measures you would want your family to make on your behalf like using medical devices to aid breathing (ventilator) or a feeding tubing, blood transfusions, antibiotics, surgery, etc.

A Financial Power of Attorney document names someone to be in charge of your finances in the case you are unable to handle your own affairs.  A Living Will allows you to state your wishes regarding your end-of-life care if you are in a vegetative state and cannot communicate.  To ensure the best legal advice, please consult an attorney.

MorningStar Senior Living of Billings represents the finest in senior living with a unique mission statement of: “to honor, to serve, to invest.”  Proving a true home for residents, our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and hiring staff with a felt calling to serve.  Visit our website to learn more about the area’s most trusted independent living and assisted living.

Are You Worried About Your Parent Living Alone?

July 15, 2020 by Suzanne Chapple

If your parent lives alone and you are worried that they need more personal daily care than you can provide, it may be time to look into other options.  One of those is assisted living care, which focuses on providing residents the daily help they need to retain as much independence as possible.

Especially now, you want to judiciously make the best, safest choice for your mom or dad.  To help you do so, experts offer a few suggestions of things to think about before you begin your search (obviously you want to respect mom or dad’s preferences and wishes).  They recommend that while you take into account your parent’s immediate needs, you also give some thought to their future needs.  So, find out if the assisted living home you are thinking about has limitations in terms of how much care the community provides should their needs change.

Your questions should include the level of care services they are licensed for as well as their limitations.  For instance, at MorningStar Assisted Living and Memory Care of Fort Collins, our licensing provides us with a range of available care services that makes it possible for us to extend the stay of residents even as health conditions change.

Unless a resident requires round-the-clock nursing (including the management of acute pain), MorningStar is honored, with the partnership of a hospice agency, to care for a resident through end-of-life.  In addition, as a licensed “Directed Level of Care” community, we care for residents within a secure environment (memory care) who, due to compromised cognitive ability, cannot recognize danger and, therefore, cannot respond appropriately and/or cannot express their needs.

While we know there is a lot of worrisome stories in the news about COVID-19 among nursing and senior living communities, MorningStar of Fort Collins wants potential families to understand that the care of those beneath our roof is our utmost priority.  To that end we are following protocols - in some cases exceeding them - set forth by the CDC and other organizations in our fight against the coronavirus; and are confident in our ability to safely accept new residents.   MorningStar of Fort Collins is a true home where the residents are heroes who deserve to be treated with dignity and respect; and MorningStar families know they can trust their loved ones to us.

MorningStar of Fort Collins’ mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest” sets us apart from other senior living options. We have built a foundation on honoring God, valuing our seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Set in a warm, loving atmosphere with resort-style amenities, MorningStar of Fort Collins offers residents the best assisted living home in the area.
