Make a List of Questions for Your Doctor

July 05, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Most of us have walked out of our doctor’s office and quickly thought of a question we wished we had asked the doctor.  We know that doctors are busy and our time with them is short, but the medical profession says it is important for seniors to proactively communicate with their health care providers and control the appointment.

They recommend putting together a list of questions you want to ask before your next visit.  This can help to give you a better understanding of your medical conditions and improve your ability to self-manage them.  You should also bring a list of all of the prescription drugs, over-the-counter drugs, and vitamins and supplements you are currently taking.

General questions to ask include:

·         Are my medications still appropriate to my condition and should the dosage be lowered or increased?

·         How are my blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose levels?

·         What type of exercise do you recommend for someone my age?

·         Is my weight a problem?

·         What steps should I take to improve my health?

If you are experiencing symptoms, make a list of all of them and include frequency and the amount of pain or discomfort associated with them.  If your doctor diagnoses a disease, ask them how do you spell it and if you will need any tests or medications to treat it?  In addition ask your doctor how the condition will affect your long-term health, and what, if any, are the side effects of the medications.

Too many seniors are reluctant to ask questions of their health care providers but it is important to become educated about your medical conditions, treatments and possible health risks.  In fact, most doctors say they wish their patients would be more proactive and ask questions during their visit as it lets them know you understand your health conditions.

MorningStar at Arrowhead represents the best in assisted living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. Good Nutrition is Important to Seniors’ Health

June 28, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

The National Resource Center on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Aging states that, “1 in 4 older Americans have poor nutrition.”  They explain that malnutrition puts them at risk of becoming overweight or underweight as well as cause weaken muscles and bones.

Poor nutrition also leaves you more vulnerable to disease and makes it harder to manage the diseases you may already have such as heart disease and diabetes.  An unhealthy diet can even jeopardize a senior’s immune system and make them more susceptible to colds and flus.

Furthermore, as many seniors experience a decrease in their appetite, they need to increase the nutrient density of their food, not necessarily portion size.  This means eating a well-balanced diet chock-full of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients as well as more fiber.   Avoid foods high in processed sugars, saturated and trans fats, and salt.  Eating alone can also decrease a senior’s appetite so make meals a more social occasion and serve foods that taste as good as they look and smell.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, an assisted living dementia care community, we recognize that good nutrition is vital to seniors’ health. Starting with having our own Executive Chef, our meals are largely prepared from scratch and include the freshest ingredients.  MorningStar’s chef even uses “super foods” such as acai berries, Omega 3 fats, dark chocolate, and leafy, dark greens. In addition, out of respect for some of our residents’ compromised abilities at the table, food is geared toward their needs.  Our delicious nutritionally-balanced meals include easy-to-eat finger foods as well as texture-modified pureed meat and vegetables.

Family style meals shared by residents and team members encourage residents’ appetites as well as to provide any needed assistance with eating.  Many of meals include offering dishes from serving bowls and platters as a way to help residents connect to memories of family meals throughout their lives.  Please visit our website for more details on all of the amenities and services offered at MorningStar at Bear Creek.

MorningStar at Bear Creek brings a unique vision to senior living with our mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Study Shows a Link Between a Loss of Smell and Alzheimer’s Disease

June 25, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

A study has revealed a link between a declining sense of smell and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer’s disease.  Researchers found that neurodegeneration associated with Alzheimer’s has a notable effect on the brain circuits that process our sense of smell.

The 2016 study was conducted by the Massachusetts General Hospital and involved a group of 183 participants of which 70 were cognitively normal and 74 tested normal on cognitive tests but were concerned about their cognitive abilities.  Another 29 had MCI and 10 had been diagnosed with possible Alzheimer’s.  Those who performed more poorly on the olfactory tests were found more likely to have the variant of the APOE gene, related to an increased risk of Alzheimer’s.  One of the study’s authors, Mark Albers, MD, PhD, assistant professor of neurology at Mass General Institute for Neurodegenerative Disease, states, “There is increasing evidence that the neurodegeneration behind Alzheimer’s disease starts at least 10 years before the onset of memory symptoms.”  Furthermore, he stresses the benefit of an early diagnosis as the individuals can begin appropriate therapeutic treatments.

Dr. Albers continues, “If these results hold up, this sort of inexpensive, noninvasive screening could help us identify the best candidates for novel therapies.”  In addition identifying the disease early may also be instrumental in helping to develop effective treatments that will delay and slow the progress of the disease.

MorningStar at Bear Creek is a specialized assisted living dementia care community that provides the Colorado Springs area with compassionate, individualized care for those with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and other dementia-related diseases.  Our 48 suites include studio and one-and two-bedroom floor plans and all of the amenities and services required to provide the best care.

Scan Makes It Possible to Detect Alzheimer’s Disease

June 22, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Alzheimer's disease is identified by the buildup of toxic plaques of amyloid protein in the brain, and until recently, there was not a medical test to diagnosis the disease; it had to be done post mortem.  Now a type of scan known as amyloid PET imaging has made it possible for researchers to detect Alzheimer’s disease on living people.

The recent study was a nationwide trial with over 11,000 participants who had MCI (mild cognitive impairment) or dementia symptoms and beneficiaries of Medicare insurance.  While still evaluating all of the results, researchers report that in “more than 60 percent of participants, amyloid PET scans caused doctors to change their minds about medical management. This was more than twice the number that the investigators had been expecting.”

To do the scan, the person first gets an injection of a chemical tracer that travels to the brain and sticks to any amyloid plaques that may be present. As the scan is performed, the tracer allows the amyloid plaques to be seen.  The test is not broadly available as insurance companies are not willing to pay for the expensive procedure but that should change over time.

While some people may be uncomfortable with the idea of taking a test to determine if they have Alzheimer’s, researchers say it can be a good thing for several reasons.  If the amyloid PET scan rules out Alzheimer’s, doctors can re-evaluate the person and try to figure out if their symptoms are a result of a medication side effect, depression or something else.

If the scan does indicate Alzheimer’s, the person can be given the proper medication and treatments, and along with their family, have time to prepare for the future.  The lead author on the study, Gil D. Rabinovici, a professor of neurology at the University of California, San Francisco, says that, "We were impressed by the magnitude of these results, which make it clear that amyloid PET imaging can have a major impact on how we diagnose and care for patients with Alzheimer's disease and other forms of cognitive decline."

MorningStar at Bear Creek brings a unique vision to senior living with our mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Those with Alzheimer’s Disease are at Risk for Heat Related Illness

June 15, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Along with the arrival of summer, come the hotter temperatures.  While many of us look forward to this time of year, it is important to note that extremely hot weather can be hazardous for our elderly loved ones and especially for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease.

Experts explain that the reason seniors are more susceptible to heat related illnesses is a combination of factors such as: “alteration in fluid balance, inability to afford air conditioning or other cooling methods, medications that cause an increased susceptibility to heat stroke (as a result of interruption in normal fluid balance), and more.”  In fact the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) say that heat-related deaths in seniors are most likely under reported each year.

For someone suffering from Alzheimer’s, extreme heat can heighten the symptoms of Alzheimer’s including confusion, irritability and dizziness.  The risk of heat-related illness in people with dementia can be exacerbated by their being under or overweight, and/or having blood pressure and circulatory issues.  The Huff Post’s AlzLive Blog warns caretakers that many medications including those targeted to treat Alzheimer’s can interfere with the body’s ability to regulate heat.

There are several things you can do to help the person stay cool and avoid a heat-related illness.  To start with, make sure they drink plenty of fluids (avoid sugared drinks and tea and coffee).  Stay indoors during the hottest times of day and have your loved one wear lightweight, light colored clothing.  Use air conditioning and make sure their bedding is lightweight and clean.  Experts say most importantly remember the individual might not be able to express their discomfort so it may be up to you to notice any changes or distress they are experiencing.

At MorningStar at Bear Creek, we are a team of compassionate, professionals who feel privileged to serve our most “tender residents.”  We also consider the care and support of our residents’ family members to be part of our job as we know how traumatizing a diagnosis of dementia can be for the entire family.  Please visit our website to schedule a tour of one of the area’s best Alzheimer homes.

Today’s Assisted Living Communities

June 15, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Too many older adults do not have a true picture of what senior living is all about.  They still think senior living communities are like the nursing homes their elderly relatives had been “sent to” years ago once they could no longer care for themselves, and considered them to be depressing places.  Since these misconceptions are from people who have not visited one of today’s modern, vibrant communities, they do not understand that nothing could be farther from the truth.

In the case of assisted living communities, residents typically are able to lead a more independent lifestyle than many elderly adults who live alone as they have access to assistance whenever they need it.   Others worry assisted living communities may be too expensive. However, the truth is that once you factor in your current living expenses (including the costs of home repairs and maintenance) as well as the additional costs of paying for a variety of care services, assisted living is a lot less expensive than you thought.

Seniors also fear an assisted living community may not offer enough to keep them feeling productive and engaged.  Again nothing could be farther from the truth.  At MorningStar Assisted Living & Memory Care at Arrowhead, we offer a whole host of resort-style amenities and services along with meaningful programs and activities. As a resident, you benefit from social interactions, physical activities geared toward your fitness level, and programs designed to stimulate your mind.

Furthermore, assisted living gives a resident’s family peace of mind knowing help is close at hand whenever it is needed.  Families are also comforted by the fact their loved one is getting nutritional meals that are not only good for them but delicious tasting.  MorningStar at Arrowhead invites area families to set up a tour to see why our residents are proud to call us “home.”

Read What Residents and Families Say about MorningStar of Billings

June 12, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

You do not have to take just our word for it when we say MorningStar of Billings is the area’s best senior living community but rather read some reviews from actual residents and their families.  Whenever our families let us know we are doing a good job, it affirms everything our wonderful, caring team does every day to ensure the comfort and wellbeing of our cherished residents.

We were especially pleased to hear praise from a resident who writes, “There's no place like home, but MorningStar is actually better than home. All your responsibilities are lifted, and day-to-day life is light and fun. We are happier and more content than we've been in years because we chose MorningStar.”

Another review from the adult child of one of our residents offered generous words of praise. They write, “The people at Morningstar have gone out of their way to make my parents comfortable. The atmosphere is wonderful and the many activities and entertainment make being a resident there fun. My dad can't say enough nice things about the dining room menu, and Mom is always in the library! I feel like my parents are in a safe place.”

In addition, appreciation from residents’ families who have been given peace of mind really touch our hearts.  One daughter expressed this about her mother: “my heart is happy that she is in such a good place at this point in her life!”  She goes on to explain “The staff in Billings has been kind, caring, and they treat our whole family with respect. Mom has had an easy time making friends and being included by the other residents. There are always lots of activities, special events, and groups to join if the residents are interested. If I have ever had a special request, the staff goes out of their way to help me.”

Our beautiful community offers independent living, assisted living, and memory care.  Please visit our website to set up a tour to see firsthand why residents are proud to call our community home.

A New Test to Diagnose Alzheimer’s Disease

June 10, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Up until now, the only tests physicians had to actually diagnose Alzheimer’s disease were PET scans and lumbar punctures but these tests are both expensive and invasive.  This is why many doctors make their diagnosis of the disease based on observing symptoms and ruling out other causes.

However researchers now think there could be another option with the development of an optical imaging system that can detect a hallmark of the disease.  Medical News Today writes that the “non- invasive, high-resolution imaging technique was able to detect beta-amyloid plaques in the retinas of patients with Alzheimer's disease.”  The findings indicate that the retinal imaging technique was able to identify a 4.7-times greater abundance of beta-amyloid plaques in the retinas of patients with Alzheimer's disease as compared with the retinas of the controls. The small study was first reported in the JCI Insight journal.

Another study out of Washington University in St. Louis had similar results but researchers caution that both studies are from a very small group of people.  Nonetheless it shows that retinal imaging may be a feasible, low-cost screening technique to detect Alzheimer’s in the future.  Furthermore, while there is no cure for the disease, scientists say early detection could lead to individuals being treated much earlier and could help to prevent some of the damage done by the disease.

Early signs of Alzheimer’s include memory loss that impedes one’s ability to manage daily activities such as forgetting recently learned information, repeatedly asking for the same information, and forgetting important events or dates.  Other signs are having difficulty problem-solving and completing every-day tasks, confusion with time and place, and vision and spatial problems.  Consult with your healthcare provider if you are experiencing any of the early signs of the disease.  Your doctor will rule out other problems that may be causing your symptoms.

Its Not to Late to Improve Your Health

June 10, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Seniors often feel it is too late to make a difference in their health or that it may be too complicated to do so.  The truth is that taking better care of your physical health can be quite simple and enjoyable and may help you feel like a new person.

The first piece of advice is to make sure you are managing your medical conditions, diseases and ailments in the most effective manner.  This includes making sure you are receiving the best medical care for your medical issues as well as learning about and practicing activities that can help you better manage your conditions.  Examples include certain types of exercises which can reduce your blood sugar and may even eliminate the need to take insulin or other medication for diabetes.  Or making small changes to your diet to not only help you take off a few extra pounds but relieve pain in your back and knees.

Furthermore, enough cannot be said about the benefits of regular physical activity regardless of your age or state of health.  Exercises for seniors should include daily or weekly routines to improve balance, flexibility, aerobic conditioning, and muscle strengthening.   However before you integrate an exercise activity into your life, please consult with your health care provider.

Another aspect of improving your physical health is to practice good nutrition.  Seniors can benefit from eating well and drinking plenty of water.   Changing to a healthier diet will give you more energy and help you lose weight and prevent or alleviate the severity of illnesses.

Lastly experts say it is important for people of any age including seniors to get enough sleep.  A good night’s sleep will help you feel more energetic during the day, and it is recommended seniors 65 years and older get seven to nine hours of sleep per night.

At MorningStar at Arrowhead, we provide our residents with tasty, nutritious meals and plenty of opportunities to exercise.  Committed to being one of the best retirement communities Peoria or Glendale has to offer, our goal is to give residents a true “home” with a lifestyle of comfort, wellness and community. Please visit our website to learn more about our resort-style amenities and services.

This post is intended for informational purposes only.  Please contact your health care provider with any questions or concerns you have regarding your health.

Staying Hydrated this Summer

June 05, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Now that summer is almost here seniors need to remember to stay hydrated.  There are several reasons why the elderly are more at risk for dehydration starting with the fact that as we age, our sense of thirst diminishes so we may forget to drink.  In addition medications commonly prescribed to seniors such as diuretics, antipsychotics and corticosteroids can affect a senior’s ability to maintain fluids.  Also our bodies do not conserve fluids as well as when we were younger.  Lastly it can be difficult for older adults to adapt to fluctuating temperatures, which may cause them to overheat quicker.

Dehydration can also occur in individuals with dementia as the disease causes them to forget to eat and drink, and in the more advanced stages, many people have trouble swallowing.  Furthermore, seniors with incontinent problems sometimes purposely limit their fluid intake as a way to avoid accidents.

Whatever the reason, dehydration can lead to serious health problems and as the outside temperatures soar, seniors must take care.  Experts recommend seniors get about 64 ounces of fluids a day, and in hot and humid weather or with certain medical conditions or medications, they may need to drink even more.

To make it easier to drink more water, try mixing in a little juice or fruit or add a flavored water enhancer.  Other types of foods that help increase your fluid intake include savory broths, fruits such as watermelon, grapes, oranges and cantaloupe, smoothies, and herbal iced teas.

MorningStar Memory Care at Bear Creek provides loving, individualized care for those with memory impairment.  We understand the need for seniors to take extra care during the summer months and our excellent food service is comprised of lots of fresh foods and healthy, refreshing beverages.  Our dementia care is based on our extensive knowledge and experience with dementia-related diseases and we support residents from the early onset of the disease through the final stages.  Please visit our website to learn more.

MorningStar at Bear Creek embodies the very best in senior living with a distinct mission statement of “to honor, to serve, to invest” that sets us apart from other senior living communities.  With a foundation built on honoring God, valuing seniors and investing in a staff with a felt calling to serve, we offer loving, compassionate care within a beautiful home-like setting.  Please set up a tour to see for yourself our unique approach to dementia care.

MorningStar at Arrowhead offers the greater Glendale/Peoria area unsurpassed senior living.  Along with 60 private assisted living suites, our Reflections Neighborhood has 25 secure suites in studio and two-bedroom configurations devoted to caring for seniors with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.

The Reflections Neighborhood is specifically designed to allow our most tender residents the freedom to explore their surroundings safely and easily.  Within the safe haven of our “Neighborhood,” we have created an environment that encourages and supports residents’ independence whenever possible.   We accept residents in the earliest stage of the disease right through to those in more advanced phases that require the highest level of care.

As dementia care specialists, we understand how devastating it is when a loved one receives a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another memory loss disease, and we want you to know we are here to help.  We consider residents’ family members to be part of our MorningStar family as we walk alongside the memory-impaired and their families on this unexpected journey.  Our unique approach to memory care is called Lavender Sky, which is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of memory loss.

We are staffed by experienced and compassionate caregivers who truly understand the disease.  Our holistic approach to memory care is designed to affirm the value of the person and to find ways to celebrate the smallest successes.  MorningStar leverages the power of dance, music, art, exercise, animals and aromatherapy in order to heal and comfort, and provides meaningful wellness programs and activities that engage our residents.  Also as many adverse behaviors are often side effects from antipsychotic drugs, our goal is to have as few as possible of our residents on such drugs.

MorningStar at Arrowhead represents the best in senior living with a unique mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” We have built our foundation on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve…all of which contributes to creating a true home for residents amid a beautiful, serene setting. Call to schedule a visit to the finest assisted living and memory care in the area.

To get the real feel of our lovely community, we encourage you to schedule a tour by visiting our website and follow the “Schedule a Tour” link to our online form.  We will get back to you as soon as possible.  If you let us know your priorities, we will tailor your tour to make sure those are addressed and ask that you allow at least 45 minutes for your visit.  If you care to join us for lunch, please allow 90 minutes for your tour in order to enjoy a leisurely meal.  Let us know if you intend to do lunch when you set up the appointment.

The A Place for Mom’s website, which is the largest assisted living referral service, offers some tips on what to look for when taking a tour of a senior living community.  One of their suggestions includes “following your nose.”  In other words does the place smell and look clean and fresh?  Also ask about housekeeping and laundry services and what are the costs?

While you are there, look in at any activities going on in the community.  Do the staff and residents look like they are enjoying themselves (before you visit us, take a look at MorningStar of Billings’ monthly calendars online)?  Additionally, ask about the level of personal care provided as well as about our safety and security procedures.  Do not forget to look at the outdoor spaces.  Finally, A Place for Mom suggests that you think about whether you or your loved one would be happy living there, and in the end, trust your instinct and follow your heart.

Please visit MorningStar of Billings’ website to learn more about our gorgeous independent living, assisted living and memory care facility.  If you like what you see, go ahead and schedule a tour.

MorningStar at Bear Creek’s Unique Approach to Memory Care

May 28, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Getting a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or another dementia-related disease is devastating for the person and their family.  All of one’s carefully laid plans are cast aside as their future takes a much different path.

MorningStar at Bear Creek is an assisted living dementia care community in Colorado Springs designed by specialists in senior interiors, the award-winning firm of Thoma-Holec Design.  Beyond the gorgeous natural surroundings of the Rocky Mountains, our community is conveniently located near medical facilities, shopping, and restaurants.  On-site amenities include beautiful common areas for gathering, bistro, fitness room, sensory room, and secure courtyards, patios and strolling paths.

Unlike other memory care communities, MorningStar’s extensive experience has allowed us to gain a deep understanding of the disease, and we consider it our privilege to serve those with memory loss.  We recognize that the person’s essence remains and are committed to finding ways to connect with and nurture that essence.

We also consider residents’ family members to be part of our MorningStar family as we walk alongside the memory-impaired and their families on this unexpected journey.  Our unique approach to memory care is called Lavender Sky, which is how we thoughtfully enter, embrace and explore the entirely different and isolating world of memory loss.  Additionally as we believe that many of the adverse behaviors associated with dementia are often side effects of antipsychotic drugs, our goal is to have less than 10% of our residents on any of these types of drugs.

Every aspect of our memory care is designed to address the needs of our residents including 24/7 compassionate Care Mangers, wellness programs and activities that will stimulate and calm as needed.  Even our meals are designed with our most tender residents’ need in mind and will be as good to look at as they are to eat.

Please visit our website to learn more about our exceptional community.  To ensure the comfort of our residents, our 48 suites are offered in a choice of studio, one-bedroom, and two-bedroom apartments.  We look forward to meeting future Bear Creek residents and their families.

MorningStar at Bear Creek brings a unique vision to senior living with our mission statement “to honor, to serve, to invest.” Our foundation is built on honoring God, valuing all seniors and selecting staff with a felt calling to serve. Misconceptions About Alzheimer’s Disease

May 25, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

There are many misconceptions about the causes of Alzheimer’s disease and other types of dementia.  As traumatizing as it is for a family to learn a loved one has Alzheimer’s, it is also important to sort through the various truths and myths regarding the disease.

One mistake many people make when they or a family member is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s is to think their life is over.  In reality, a person can live a productive life for many years.  Adopting a healthy lifestyle is important and should include a nutrient-rich diet and routine exercise.  Experts also note it is important to stay socially connected and engage in activities that challenge the brain.  As medication is more helpful in the earlier stages, getting a proper diagnosis is vital.

People also fear that if a parent had Alzheimer’s, they will get it.  The facts are that “familial Alzheimer’s disease accounts for less than 5% of all cases of Alzheimer’s disease.”  Furthermore, remember Alzheimer’s is not only a disease of the elderly.  While there are many fewer cases, it does occur in people as young as their 40s and 50s.

Another common myth is the belief that dental amalgam fillings containing a small amount of mercury caused the disease.  Studies have shown no such correlation between the two.  Others believe aluminum pans are responsible, and while a few studies suggest a small possibility, most experts think the link is questionable.

Some people think memory loss is a natural progression of aging, but the truth is while many of us experience some decline in memory, if the loss is disrupting your day-to-day life, you need to see a healthcare provider.  Another thing to remember is a diagnosis of dementia is not necessary better than being told a person has Alzheimer’s, it is just another form of the disease.

If you or a loved one is suffering from dementia, please contact one of the area’s top assisted living dementia care communities.  MorningStar at Bear Creek takes a holistic approach that is individualized and encompasses the whole person. Please visit our website for more.

Help Prevent a Fall

May 24, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

Falls are one of the most common reasons why elderly adults seek emergency care.  In fact the National Institute on Aging (NIA) reports. “More than one in three people age 65 years or older falls each year.”  Moreover they add that the risk of falling and fall-related problems rises with age.  However, they say this is no reason to avoid being active, and there are a few things you can do to help prevent a fall.

Seniors need to try and stay physically active and to follow an appropriate exercise plan.  Regular exercise can increase your strength, and improve your muscle tone (be sure to check with your doctor before starting any new exercise).  Even mild weight-bearing exercises such as climbing stairs or walking can help to slow down osteoporosis (bone loss).

Another way to reduce your risk of a fall is to limit the amount of alcohol you drink as even a small amount can affect your balance and reflexes.  Also use a walker or cane if you are unsteady on your feet.  In addition be sure to wear the proper footwear - non-skid, rubber-soled, low-heeled or lace-up shoes.   Take extra care when walking on wet or icy surfaces.

Do keep in mind several health conditions including diabetes and heart disease as well as problems with your thyroid, nerves, feet, or blood vessels can affect your balance and increase your risk of a fall.  The same warning applies to medications that cause you to feel dizzy or to experience periods of sleepiness.

MorningStar at Arrowhead’s goal is to be one of the best retirement communities Peoria and Glendale offers, and we consider seniors to be heroes who deserve to be treated with the utmost dignity and respect.  Our gorgeous community was built to accommodate our residents’ every need and to see to their comfort as well as their safety.  We encourage you to visit our website for contact information and to learn more about our exceptional assisted living and memory care community.

Hear What Family Members Say About MorningStar at Bear Creek

May 22, 2019 by Suzanne Chapple

The staff at MorningStar at Bear Creek feels privileged to serve our very special residents. As our Wellness Director, Amber Chaney explains, “God has called me to serve seniors, as they teach me how to appreciate life and to overcome challenges.”  This respect for our residents is what motivates us to lovingly provide our unique brand of dementia care and is why we feel honored to get positive affirmation from families of our residents regarding the care of their loved one.

We recently heard from someone whose family member suffers from a traumatic brain injury. She writes about the extraordinary care he receives and how everyone takes an interest and tries to develop a relationship with him.   She goes on to say “the staff even tries to share humor with him. They work to engage him.  His quality of life is far better at MorningStar Memory Care at Bear Creek than at anywhere else since his health issues began.”

As we know, facing a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s alone can be daunting, which is why we feel Bear Creek is here to also provide support for the families of our residents.  This makes the following review of our community especially gratifying as she says, ““MorningStar Memory Care at Bear Creek is a phenomenal facility. The staff has been fabulous. They are very kind to my mother, to me and to my family. My Mom acknowledges that they are sweet to her. They give her hugs and they are loving with her. They have been very responsive to me. If I call in, I get a return call quickly.”

Our senior living community is dedicated to providing individualized memory care to residents with mild to advanced stages of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. MorningStar at Bear Creek offers 48 suites that are designed to provide a secure setting yet allow residents to explore their spacious surroundings freely and easily.  We end our post with another quote from a family member of a resident who says, “I guess if I had to summarize my thoughts about MorningStar Memory Care at Bear Creek, it would simply be that I trust them. That is a good feeling to have.”
